First phase Centenary Restoration Fund Work - St John’s Drinking Fountain
There has been a lot of hard work at St John’s Drinking Fountain! The team from UK Restoration Services cleared crumbling mortar from the gaps and refilled them with lime mortar, scrubbed the white salty deposits off the base, and stopped the leak, among other things. Phew!
The fountain wasn’t always this colourful. Those bright colours date from the 1990s, and we’re hoping to bring back its original look, but we’ll share more once we know what’s possible.
Do you have photos, memories or stories connected to St John’s Drinking Fountain or Burslem? We’d love to see them! Share them here: https://lnkd.in/ehVpCxtA.
These works are led by Stoke-on-Trent Council & Re-Form Heritage thanks to a £240,252 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. These works will run until the middle of November.

Who were the people who shaped Hanley, and how do we look after their memory?
On 19th September, as part of Heritage Open Days, we held a guided walk and self-guided heritage trail from Hanley Park Pavilion to the War Memorial at Hanley Cemetery, recently restored as part of the Centenary Restoration Fund. Thank you to the Friends of Hanley Park for hosting our event, and to Tom Pine (VAST) for leading the guided walk. We also had some lovely conversations with everyone who ventured up to the cemetery.

On Saturday 17th October, our CEO Andrew Emery welcomed George Jerger, Henrietta Billings and other members of SAVE Britain's Heritage to Middleport Pottery. They enjoyed a personal tour of the site learning both about the heritage of Middleport and its restoration and revitalisation over the last 15 years.
George Jerger said “I just wanted to add my huge thanks for such a wonderful visit to Middleport last Saturday. The tour was just perfect! And what a treat to be able to enter the bottle kiln. As we left Middleport, our group was full of smiles and enthusiasm. It was lovely to hear how much everyone had enjoyed both the visit (and the time to explore the shop 😉).”

On 11th September, as part of Heritage Open Days, we set off on a guided walk through Fenton from Fenton War Memorial to Glebedale Park Memorial. Along the way we explored how communities remember, and the themes of remembrance, industry and landscape change.

Thank you to The Hub for welcoming us at our halfway stop.
At the end, we sat on the grass and talked about memories, regeneration and different ways to memorialise people and the past. It was a real highlight, and we’re grateful to everyone who came along and shared their thoughts.
If you have photos, memories or stories connected to Fenton War Memorial or Glebedale Park Memorial? We’d love to see them! Share them here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/5mt3vS6zBC

WE HAVE BEEN AWARDED A SANDFORD AWARD!
Our amazing Learning Team here at Middleport Pottery have been awarded the Sandford Award. The Sandford Award is a standard of excellence in education & learning programmes in heritage sites, museums and galleries across Britain. Middleport Pottery is the only venue in Stoke-on-Trent to be announced as a 2026 winner, making us only venue in Stoke-on-Trent to receive this award since 2013.
Amanda Phillipson, Sandford Award Lead Assessor said “Middleport Pottery offers pupils a unique opportunity to learn about a craft and art form that has been at the heart of the site for more than 130 years. The combination of hands-on activities, factory tours and heritage tours helps to foster a strong sense of local pride among pupils from Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding area, and this is achieved successfully. The value of learning about the past in the very place where history was made, while traditional pottery-making processes can still be seen in action today, cannot be overstated. Through enthusiastic delivery and memorable first-hand experiences, pupils leave with a deeper understanding of their local heritage and a genuine sense of pride in the achievements of their area.”
WELL DONE TO OUR AMAZINE TEAM – WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!
