Sudbury Fire Station

Today we said an official fair well to Matt walker. Matt has served the community of Sudbury for just under 6 years. He isn’t leaving Suffolk fire and rescue completely as he is a whole time firefighter in Haverhill. Matt will be missed by all the crew at Sudbury but we hope he enjoys his well earned time off with his family.

Today Suffolk fire and rescue are sending 3 appliances to assist with the wildfires in Hampshire and Wales.

The appliances are crewed with firefighters from all across Suffolk including two from Sudbury.

Craig and Russ will say good bye to their families today and are not expected to return until Tuesday at which time further crews could be sent.

With this unprecedented weather it is important services support each other and give aid as seen at Dunwich which had 18 different services supporting Suffolk fire and rescue.

Stay safe Craig and Russ🔥

Over the last 4 days the crew at Sudbury have given there all.

A wild fire started at Dunwich heath at approximately 17.30 on Wednesday. At its largest the fire covered 150 hectares which equates to 210 football pitches..

Since Wednesday the crews have spent 75hrs at scene with both appliances attending a total of 7 times..

In between this we have attended multiple calls in Sudbury and surrounding areas.

Working at Dunwich has been challenging and hard work for everyone involved but was great to work along side a firefighting helicopter and fire services from across the country, including, Essex, Norfolk, London, Devon & Somerset, Yorkshire and many more.

Today we also want to show appreciation for the employers who release our on call firefighters and to the families who have been left behind. Missed dinners, missed bed times and missed family time is never easy.

Tonight the crew from Sudbury did a breathing apparatus drill at Rainbow Fun in Sudbury. The drill included search and rescue techniques, team work and navigating different obstacles.
Training like this is imperative to keeping our skills sharp and it was fun for all of the crew.. we would like to say a massive thank you to Sarah at rainbow fun for letting us use her facilities.
For hygiene reasons the crews wore completely clean fire kit, no boots and no gloves.
