Calling all KS3 creative writers! Are you ready to get spooky? We’re launching our KS3 Halloween Creative Writing Competition, and we want to see your imagination run wild!

Your challenge begins with one simple prompt:

“It’s a cold, misty night and you hear a knock at the door…”

Who is there? What happens next? Will your story be full of creepy characters, unexpected twists or something truly terrifying?

You can write a short story, a spooky poem or a piece of descriptive writing. The choice is yours, so get creative, be original and show us what you can do!

Once your masterpiece is complete, hand it in to Miss Wilkinson in Room 2.13 by Wednesday 4th November.

Good luck, and remember… you never know who might be waiting on the other side of the door.

On Wednesday morning, Year 7 and 8 students took part in the annual STEM Roadshow to find out more about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). This year’s theme was The Material World and Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed an educational theatre production where they were able to find out more about Materials Science and Engineering.

During this highly interactive presentation, students discovered more about the different materials that are in use everyday in the world and how these materials are made. Students also got to see how these materials are used to make everyday products that we all enjoy. Students also found out more about how careers in engineering are important and that it is something to think about for the future. In a few weeks’ time, students will take part in a follow-up live lesson.

Last Monday, our fantastic Year 8 Leaders attended the city-wide induction day at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre, where they embraced every opportunity to develop and showcase their leadership potential.

Through a wide range of sporting challenges, they worked together to design engaging activities that tested participants while providing encouragement and support. They explored what it means to be an effective leader, discussing ways to inspire, motivate and organise others with confidence.

One of the highlights of the day was the challenge of creating an inclusive session based on the experiences of people with disabilities, which our students approached with creativity, empathy and enthusiasm.

Our Year 8 Leaders were a credit to themselves and to our school. Their positive attitude, teamwork and determination made us immensely proud, and we are excited to see them apply their new skills and experiences throughout the year ahead.

🇮🇹🍕 Our final day in Italy! 🍕🇮🇹

We started the day by exploring the incredible archaeological site of Herculaneum, where students stepped back in time to discover how life was preserved following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Next, we got hands-on with Italian cuisine during a delicious mozzarella and pizza-making workshop! 🧀🍕 Students learned about traditional Italian food production, local ingredients and the importance of food in Italian culture — with the added bonus of tasting their creations!

We finished our trip with a lovely evening in Sorrento, taking in the beautiful surroundings, enjoying the atmosphere and reflecting on an unforgettable few days together. 🇮🇹

What a fantastic trip all students have had! We are so proud of how the students have represented the school throughout our time in Italy! 🇮🇹

Southmoor Geographers take over Naples! After a long travel day yesterday, students have had a great day exploring 2 of Italy’s most famous landmarks.

This morning, we climbed to the crater of Mount Vesuvius. Students were able to make real-world geographical links by considering how volcanic processes shape landscapes, the hazards they create and their impact on the people living nearby.

This afternoon, we stepped back in time at Pompeii, discovering how the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 buried the Roman city in ash and pumice. A fantastic experience for all!

We rounded off our day in beautiful Sorrento, enjoying the coastal scenery of the Bay of Naples and making further geographical links to tourism and coastal landscapes.

An amazing day connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences, bringing both Geography and History to life!

In 23 weeks' time, nearly 40 students in Years 9 and 10 will set off on an Adventure of a Lifetime to Kenya with African Adventures and Foundation of Light.

During their time in Kenya, students will volunteer in primary schools in Nakuru with building projects, supporting in lessons and leading sports activities. They will also visit the Nairobi National Park, a giraffe sanctuary and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Centre.

Students have been fundraising since January to cover as much of the cost of the trip as possible, and also to develop leadership and teamwork skills in preparation for their adventure. There have been some amazing fundraising activities!

We are supporting with general fundraising through the Foundation of Light. This will cover any additional costs in Kenya and to ensure the young people have everything they need during their adventure. Every donation makes a difference. If you’d like to support our students and help make this fantastic opportunity possible, please donate via this fundraising page: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/9lxX8eEl
