Leith Hill Place NT Arts & wellbeing Hub. FREE. *27/28* June: Poetry Hub - Poetry Open Mike - cream teas https://bit.ly/4 We welcome feedback – both positive and negative.

An atmospheric house with panoramic views across the Surrey countryside, Leith Hill Place was the childhood home of one of England's greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, who gave it to the National Trust in 1944. His grandparents, Josiah Wedgwood III and Caroline (née Darwin) moved there in 1847 and his great uncle, the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, conducted experiments in the grounds. For nearly 40 years, Leith Hill Place had been tenanted as a school boarding house, and in summer 2013, we opened to the public for the first time since the 1960s. The house is at a crossroads in its history and we invite you to visit and see it in transition. Feel inspired as you walk around a place that has been the setting for so much creativity, whilst taking in lovely views, listening to the music and relaxing with a cup of tea. Don't expect a perfectly restored National Trust place, but come with an open mind and a sense of adventure. Our house rules read as follows, please feel free to use the bits
that work for you on your own page:

What an amazing season — we have now closed our doors for the year, and we’re now looking back on a fabulous open season, culminating in our pageant ‘Whose Green and Pleasant Land?’ on 4th October.

Thank you to all our incredible participants and team who came together to tell the story of how our rural landscape has been shaped, fought over, and accessed over the centuries. It was truly spectacular and truly moving to see the community come together and celebrate our glorious landscape!

We had music from Coldharbour Village Band, Mickleham Choral Society, LHP Singers, Flotsam Orchestra, our Enclosure House band, led by Maya McCourt, Jack Chi, as well as morris dancing and music from the fantastic Boxhill Bedlam . Our community players, led by Damn Cheek Productions, gave fantastic performances, alongside spoken word poetry by Rosie May Jones.

Thank you to everyone who came together to make it an unforgettable and utterly magical day!

Free Community Pageant at Leith Hill Place

Leith Hill Place will open its doors for the final time this season on Sunday 4 October with a free community pageant in the grounds featuring music, poetry and theatre.

Titled 'Whose Green and Pleasant Land?' this world-premiere event has been created by local theatre company Damn Cheek and artist Rosie May Jones, bringing together community groups from across the area for a unique celebration of the Surrey Hills landscape.

Inspired by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and novelist E.M. Forster's 1938 pageant, which explored 1,000 years of England's rural history, this contemporary production is an entirely new, bold, community-created performance. It looks back at the forces that have shaped this landscape while asking urgent questions about its future:

Who has shaped this land? Who gets to access it? Who feels they belong? And what responsibilities do we have to those who come after us?

Visitors can enjoy performances throughout the day, with two opportunities to experience the pageant. BSL interpreted performances and audio descriptions are also available.

Morning session: Music performances from 11am, followed by the main pageant at 12 noon.
Afternoon session: Main pageant at 2.30pm, followed by music performances around the grounds.

Artist Spotlight — Yvonne Ham

Presenting work as part of ENCLOSURE at Leith Hill Place — a contemporary art exhibition drawing on the history of land, community and protest.

As a mature emerging artist, Yvonne Ham draws on many years of both personal and professional experience. She has a particular interest in energy, frequency, and vibration, focusing on the invisible forces she believes shape our lived experience. This interest informs the creation of intrinsically beautiful, engaging, and thought-provoking works of art. She believes that all creative work carries the artist’s energy, allowing art to positively impact the viewer. Guided by this belief, she remains conscious of the moral responsibility she holds as an artist.

🖼 Go-a-Nutting
Copper sheet, copper wire, copper mesh, iron bar, iron sheet and commercial fencing

How arrogant are humans to think that Nature can be enclosed without fighting back? Where people are disconnected from Nature, there is always the unacknowledged fact that Nature is also confined.

This sculpture responds to the autumn tradition of ‘go-a-nutting’, which would have happened every autumn in the coppiced hazel areas on Leith Hill and where peasants would forage for nuts to help sustain themselves through the winter months. The sculpture shows Nature breaking through the artificial boundaries placed there by the powers that be.

ENCLOSURE is on display until 27th September at Leith Hill Place.

Catrin Finch will be performing music from ‘Notes to Self’, her first album of solo compositions in a decade — a series of reflective and deeply personal new tracks she has composed for Katy, her 13 year-old-self.

Each composition draws from her past; a 40-year career as one of her generation's most adventurous and pioneering artists. Her enduring honesty and bravery resonate, inviting listeners to connect deeply with her story, as she translates her struggles and triumphs into sound. Notes To Self not only showcases Catrin’s evolution as a musician, but charts a remarkable career shaped by her experiences as a gay woman, a cancer survivor, a sister, daughter and mother.

Fantastic talk from Helen Antrobus on Saturday, reminding us of the radical, campaigning roots of the National Trust.

So wonderful to learn about the three founders — Octavia Hill, Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley — three very different people, shaped by industrialisation, enclosure and the fight for access to green space, who came together to found the Trust in 1895. From Hill's work in London's slum housing, to Hunter's legal battles for common land, to Rawnsley's volcanic campaigning to save the Lake District. Their story reminds us why the Trust exists, and the importance of continuing the fight to protect our green spaces for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who joined us — it was a brilliant afternoon of history and conversation.

This coming Saturday, we continue the conversation with Kate Ashbrook — general secretary of the Open Spaces Society, who'll talk about the Society's 161-year fight for our right to enjoy paths and open spaces — and what the future might hold.
