It's Movember 🥸

To mark the occasion, we've looked back through Swindon's history at some of the impressive moustaches sported by our former Mayors.

But Movember is about more than moustaches. The annual campaign raises awareness of men's health, including mental health and su***de prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

With around one in eight men in the UK diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, it's an important opportunity to encourage conversations about men's health.

According to Love Food Hate Waste, UK households throw away 4.5m tonnes of edible food every year. But if you've got leftover pumpkin from Halloween, did you know that the parts you might usually discard can be turned into delicious meals and treats?

Pumpkins are packed with vitamins and minerals and can be used in both sweet and savoury recipes. Making the most of your leftover pumpkin is a simple way to reduce food waste, save money and help the environment.

Love Food Hate Waste has plenty of recipes to try, including spicy pumpkin soup, pumpkin seed brownies and pumpkin blue cheese risotto.

Around 1,000 poppies have been placed on lampposts across Swindon ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.

Council teams have been putting up the poppies along some of the Borough’s busiest roads, to complement similar displays organised by parish councils.

Local residents are invited to attend two services at the Cenotaph in Regent Circus on:
• Remembrance Sunday - Sunday, 8 November at 10.45am
• Armistice Day - Wednesday, 11 November at 10.55am

As the poppies appear across Swindon, we encourage everyone to take a moment to pause and reflect.

🦔 Keep your eyes out for hedgehogs! 🦔

Motorists have been using a brand-new route into Wichelstowe this week following the opening of Wichel Way on Monday (26 Oct).

The road links Wichelstowe, one of Swindon’s largest housing developments, with Junction 16 of the M4.

While the Council previously completed the M4 underpass, the final connection into Wichelstowe via Scott Way formed part of the wider development and has now been finished by Wichelstowe LLP, allowing the route to open in full.

The new road, complete with dedicated signs for motorists to watch out for hedgehogs, provides an additional way into and out of Wichelstowe, as well as new walking and cycling links beneath the M4.

The project included the construction of a completely new underpass beneath the motorway while keeping traffic moving above, before the final connecting road was built alongside new homes.

With around 4,000 homes planned at Wichelstowe, Wichel Way will play an important role in supporting the area’s continued growth

Every child deserves to feel safe, loved and valued.

When a child can’t live with their family, foster carers provide the stability, care and understanding that can help them thrive and stay connected to their community.

By fostering with the Council’s not-for-profit fostering service, you'll be supported every step of the way with comprehensive training, ongoing guidance and financial support starting from £485 per child, per week.

If you've ever wondered whether fostering could be right for you, we'd love to have a friendly, no-commitment chat. Our team is here to answer your questions and help you explore how you could change a child's life. Search 'fostering' on our website.

👀 Have you seen the poppies? 🌺

Around 1,000 poppies are appearing on lampposts across Swindon as the Borough prepares for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

The displays honour the bravery and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community, past and present, and offer a chance for us all to pause, reflect and remember.

Keep an eye out for them on your travels across the Borough over the coming days.
