📍 Local Lens 10 - Answer
🍺 The Jovial Monk, St Andrews Ridge
The Jovial Monk opened its doors to the public on 15 November 2000.
The name came from local resident Andrew Batch, who suggested it after Arkell’s asked the wider Swindon community for ideas for an appropriate name.
Andrew’s suggestion made reference to the local history, as the area was reputed to have once had a monastery. Arkell’s liked the name and felt it would bring a smile to customers’ faces.
There was also a bit of local character in the original pub sign, which featured caricatures of James Arkell, George Arkell and the late Peter Arkell. Peter Arkell had the honour of officially drinking the first pint when the pub opened.
