Good progress is being made with the clearance work on the lower reaches of the brook. See the photographs below to view some of the extensive work taking place.

The first photograph shows the new temporary bridge in place, allowing access to the far (Northern) bank.

Photos two and three show a view of 'before' and 'after' dredging and clearance work has taken place - a great improvement.

• Check in with relatives and neighbours, especially anyone who may find it harder to cope in a flood
• Pack an emergency kit of essential items, like bottled water and a torch and batteries - and include your insurance documents

Great news – Environment Agency contractors commence work on clearing the lower reaches of the brook!

This week (5 October), Land & Water, the main contractor appointed by the Environment Agency (EA), have started work on clearing the lower reaches of the brook. This work is the second stage of earlier work on the brook in the centre of the town, where Syston Town Council highlighted the need to also assess the brook along its lower reaches. Members of STC attended with the EA surveyor, who then produced a comprehensive report on work required.

Currently, the contractor is installing a new but temporary bridge that will allow heavy plant to gain access to both banks. It has been stated by the site manager for Land & Water that many tons of silt and vegetation are due to be dredged and removed from the site. This includes the large build-up of silt right next to the Fosse Way bridge (see photo). The task will include looking out for native species of water-living wildlife, with a view to returning as many samples as possible back to the brook.

It is hoped and expected that this project will improve the flow of water along the whole length of the brook, thereby reducing the risk of flooding to homes and businesses.
