Dog, fox or something else? 🐶 🦊

Sometimes people leave their mark at Tamworth Castle... A maker's mark, a symbol carved in stone to ward off evil spirits or some medieval graffiti. Each is now frozen in time and has its own story to tell. If only these walls could talk!

But here we have something unusual - a paw print in a brick. This one is hidden from public view in a small area between the great hall and the kitchen.

Maybe a curious fox entered the brickyard while this brick was drying or maybe it was a brickmaker's beloved dog. Either way, it was not thrown away or hidden. This brick was laid with purpose here at Tamworth Castle with the paw print on clear view. It has its own story to tell and we wonder what it was... 🤔

📢 Lost and found....
After 20 years or more apart, this percussion lock gun from our museum collection has been reunited with its hammer and repaired by Darren at Midcounties blacking (pictured left). 👏

The hammer was spotted in some stored items that were investigated during the current castle repair works. The now complete gun will go back on display in the Great Hall this week.

A hammer is the piece on the top of the gun which swings when the trigger is pulled. It strikes the percussion cup to ignite the gunpowder charge in the barrel.

On this day (27 October) in 939 King Æthelstan passed away.

Æthelstan (or Athelstan) was the son of King Edward the Elder, grandson of King Alfred The Great, and ruled the English throne from 927 to 939 making him what most modern historians regarded as England's first King.

He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon Kings and was also the nephew of our Lady of Mercia, Aethelflaed, and is depicted standing next to her in this statue in the Castle Grounds. He was her ward and educated in her Mercian court.

You can learn more about and Anglo-Saxon life in our Battle & Tribute exhibition.
