In the early hours of 10th July, a top of the range new BMW stolen earlier from Weston Super Mare entered the village from Bradford on Avon, at an estimated 90 to 100mph. Police were in a car parked at the top of the Green. The car left the road on the corner and demolished one of the Grade 2 listed posts. The impact snapped off two more posts which, with their chains came to rest wrapped round the tree on the Green. The BMW continued across the Green, breaking off one more post, hitting and writing off two parked cars and eventually coming to rest on the verge outside Ham Green House. The two occupants disappeared on foot into the night.

We are now pleased to report that progress is being made towards restoration of the posts. The Parish Council’s insurers have appointed contractors to undertake the work. The contractors have carefully removed one undamaged post to use as a template. Each post extends around 12 inches below ground and is set in concrete, so removing it was no easy task - taking two men several hours!

It’s good to see things moving forward, and we look forward to seeing the posts restored to Ham Green.

Please be assured that Holt Parish Council has been raising this issue with Bewley Homes for several months and, more recently, with Wiltshire Council Highways and Cllr Trevor Carbin. We will continue to press for the works to be completed as soon as possible.

📋 We've also highlighted the issue in our comments on Bewley's recent Certificate of Lawful Development application:

Redcliffe Development gets the go ahead – key improvements secured for Holt

While we strongly objected to 55 homes in this location, once outline permission was given by Wiltshire Council we have strived to achieve the best possible outcome for Holt. Holt Parish Council has worked hard throughout the Reserved Matters process with Redcliffe Homes to secure a number of important improvements.

These include removal of the proposed future access into open countryside, strong landscaping and materials in keeping with Holt’s character, plus biodiversity measures including bird and bat boxes and hedgehog highways. There will be bungalows and all houses are 2 storey in height with air source heat pumps. There is also a condition that garages cannot be converted into habitable rooms to ensure houses retain the correct number of parking spaces for the lifetime of the development alongside 11 visitor spaces in line with Wiltshire policy.

The Traffic Regulation Order, which will move the 30mph limit and village gateway out to the current white picket fence entrance to Holt before occupation will now be applied for as reserved matters are approved. A significant road safety improvement that Holt Parish Council has consistently pushed for.

While not every request was achieved (controlled pedestrian crossing or a roundabout) the final scheme is stronger as a result of Redcliffe's collaboration with us.

You can read the planning officer report and decision notice with all the conditions on our website -
