Development for the people of Newham not investors-save our community spaces. Fair parking charges and clean streets. * We will use our £10,800 basic councillor's allowance to fund community schemes to support the poorest residents in our wards.
* It’s time Newham had councillors who will fight against the millionaire developers and work with their working-class voters, not force them out of Newham.
* For the last 20 years the Labour council has been decanting tenants from council estates in the cause of 'regeneration' that often does not materialise. Hundreds of homes are then left empty. Then the council spent hundreds of £thousands on tenant consultations on the Carpenters Estate to get the vote the council wanted.
* Labour believes they are entitled to rule Newham and become arrogant because they keep winning 100% of council seats. This makes many of them out of touch with their working class voters.
* The council only opposed the Silver Town Tunnel on paper but did nothing to mobilise the people of Newham to oppose the increased pollution for Canning Town and Newham residents.
* The closure of the Newham City Farm showed how decisions are made by the Labour council without any genuine consultation. Nearly 50,000 people signed a petition against the closure.
* Having an elected Labour Mayor and a 100% Labour council is not good for democracy in Newham. One party rule is unhealthy and leads to poor decision making where few dare disagree with the party for fear of being expelled. Not to mention the extra allowances handed out to those who are loyal to the Mayor. Most people know the saying about 'power' and 'absolute power'.
* The Tory/Liberal governments of the last decade have made working class people poorer. Now more middle class people are also suffering because of cuts in living standards and rising prices . These are deliberate policies of those that believe in the market system of capitalists economies. Unless there is a political party that argues for an alternative to the capitalist system then more people will become disillusioned with politics as no alternative is offered by the Labour Party. For example, the biggest cause of the housing crisis is selling off council housing. Labour doesn't campaign to end council house sales. Yet Newham has the largest waiting list in the country and 100% controlled council. Why don't they speak up for the worst off in Newham?
