The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is a division of NHS National Services Scotland (NSS). Accountable to the Scottish Government, NSS works at the very heart of the health service, providing national support services and expert advice to NHSScotland. It also plays an active and crucial role in the delivery of effective healthcare to patients and the public. SNBTS is the specialist provider of transfusion medicine in Scotland, supplying high quality blood, tissues, cells and services. We work with communities, hospitals and professionals to ensure that the donor's gift is used wisely and effectively for the benefit of patients. Our key priority is to ensure that NHSScotland has enough blood to meet the transfusion needs of patients in Scotland. It is our responsibility to make sure that blood, tissues and cells are available when patients need them.

71 strangers rolled up their sleeves to keep Derek going through leukaemia.
Now his wife, Carolann Smith, is paying it forward. And she brought her team.
Carolann's colleagues at Edrington joined her to give blood for families they may never meet.
She knows exactly what happens on the other side of that donation.
Since September 2024, Derek has needed 71 units of blood, each from a different donor. They carried him through chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and the complications that followed. And that's before counting platelets.
Regular donor Carolann said: "I'll never know whose blood helped keep Derek going. But today, maybe one of our donations will be there for another Derek."
That's what one person can start.
