🌬🌊 Stay Safe 🌊🌬

Storm Austen is currently moving across North Devon bringing strong winds and large swells.

Strong NW winds are likely to show gusts of upto 40-55mph this afternoon.

High tide in lfracombe is 16:57.

Strong winds, large swells and high tides on the seafronts will present increased risks.

Please do not put yourself in danger by getting too close to sea walls or defences.

Waves can throw large debris over walls and cause serious injury.

It is not worth the risk just for a selfie, or instagram post.

If you see anyone in trouble on the coast or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

🚨 Attendance Request 🚨

📟 Monday 7th September 09:18

The team was paged, along with our colleagues from Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue to reports of a dog having gone over the cliff between Ramsey Beach and Heddons Mouth.

Once on scene, the teams met up with the first informant and got further information on where the dog had last been seen.

A cliff rescue system was put in place and a cliff rescue technician was lowered around 150m in an attempt to locate the dog, a German Pointer.

The dog was not seen and the technician was brought up again to review the plan to locate the dog.

The Officer in Charge requested the inshore lifeboat from RNLI Ilfracombe to assist locating the dog with their vantage point looking up from the sea.

During this sea based search, our RNLI colleagues said they could hear the dogs barking further along the coastpath, the dogs owners also said they thought they could hear barking further along.

The cliff rescue system was dismantled and moved to the area the dog could be heard from.

As this was in progress, the dog appeared back on the coastpath and into the hands of the cliff rescue technician, having managed to self rescue, after which the dog was passed back, uninjured, to the grateful owners.

Canine companions love going for ‘walkies’ and not much beats a trip to the coast. But sadly, many dogs die each year after running over cliff edges.

Dogs are easily distracted by all the exciting sounds and smells on a coastal walk and often may want to chase a bird or an animal.

It's safer to keep your dog on a lead when out walking along the coast. It’s also better for the local wildlife, especially during spring and summer when ground nesting birds are breeding at the coast.
Reduce the risks:

🐕‍🦺 Always keep dogs on a lead at the coast, especially near cliff edges.

⛔️ If they get stuck on a ledge, in mud or swept out to sea, don’t go after them - most dogs make it back safely, but you might not.

🗣 Call your dog from a place of safety to keep them oriented and help them get back to you.

In an emergency, call 9️⃣9️⃣9️⃣ and ask for the Coastguard. Stay in a safe place so coastguard rescue teams can locate you.

🚨 Attendance Requests 🚨

Due to the sensitive nature of some of the taskings, we cannot report on all the jobs we have attended.

📟 Wednesday 26th August 16:10

Paged to reports of a missing 8 year old on Woolacombe Beach.
While the team was making their way to the area, information came in that the child had been found and the team was stood down.

📟 Monday 31st August 18:20

Paged to reports of a missing surfer who had not been seen for some time at Puttsborough. While the team was getting ready to leave the station, information came in that the surfer had been located and the team was stood down.

📟 Thursday 3rd September 17:20

Paged to reports of potential ordnance on Woolacombe Beach, found by a metal detectorist. Once on scene the item was located and imaged so the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team could assess the object. While this was going on, a cordon was made around the object to prevent any injuries to the team and public should it turn out to be live. After assessment by the EOD and Plymouth Navy, the object was not deemed ordnance, and the item was removed from the beach by the police for disposal.

Remember, if you see anyone in trouble on the coast or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

📟 Thursday 20th August 13:21

The team were paged following a 999 call from a member of the public who was concerned about a windsurfer in the sea behind Capstone Hill.

The first informant had witnessed the windsurfer falling into the water multiple times and believed they were struggling to get back to the safety of the harbour.

On arrival the team observed the windsurfer fall into the water a few more times and then successfully make their way into the harbour and over to the watersports area at Larkstone.

After meeting with the windsurfer, they confirmed that they had been in the water multiple times, but were fine and impressed at the concern from the public and the teams response.
Happy all was okay, the team stood down.

The call from the first informant was made with good intent.

Remember, if you see anyone in trouble on the coast or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

📟 Wednesday 19th August 16:53

The operations room received a 999 call from a member of the public who had reported hearing shouts for help while walking around Little Hangman near Combe Martin.

Paged along with our colleagues from RNLI Ilfracombe, a search of Little Hangman and Wild Pear beach from above and from the water was made to try to locate the origin of the shouts.

Information came in that there were two paddleboarders, who were possibly the casualties, on Wild Pear beach and the team began to make their way down.

As they started the walk down, the two paddleboarders reached the top and confirmed that they had indeed been calling for help.

While they had been paddleboarding, the conditions had changed and they were unable to make any progress back to Combe Martin beach and had shouted for help.

Fortunately, they were able to reach the safety of Wild Pear Beach, unaware that their calls for help had been heard.

After confirming there were no injuries, and helping them get back to Combe Martin beach, a little safety advice was given and the team stood down.

Remember, if you see or think anyone is in trouble on the coast or in the sea, do as the first informant did and dial 999, asking for the coastguard.

Here is a quick report of some of the jobs the team have been involved in recently.
We cannot report on all the jobs we have attended due to the sensitive nature of them

📟 18/07/26 - 11:11 UTC
Paged after multiple 999 calls were received for red flares being seen close to the coast at Brandy Bay. As the team was mustering, the operations room stood the team down from the job as further information had come in, negating the need for the team to deploy.
The team was held at the station as two further jobs had come in simultaneously. One for ordnance at Crow Point and a further Medical incident, also at Crow Point.
Our colleagues from Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the ordnance, and the ambulance service had got to the medical incident and updated the operations room that we were not required, so the team stood down.

📟 18/07/26 - 12:42 UTC
Paged to reports of 2 Kayakers struggling off Bull Point.
Arriving on scene, with a high vantage point, the Kayakers were observed going into Lee Bay, not actually kayaking, but on Stand Up Paddle Boards. Relocating to Lee Bay, the casualties were met with, and they confirmed that they had been struggling. After safety advice was given the team stood down.

📟 24/07/26 - 13:30 UTC
Paged along with our colleagues from Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team to search for a 10 YO on Woolacombe Beach who had gone missing near the beach hut area.
The team arrived on scene and followed search protocols to locate the missing child. After a short time, they were located towards Puttsborough, beyond Black Rock by a member of the family. Happy there were no further requests, the teams stood down.

📟 25/07/26 - 13:59 UTC
Paged along with our colleagues from Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team to assist in the search for a missing 8 YO. As the team was mustering, reports came in that the child had been found safe and well.

📟 26/07/26 - 15:09 UTC
Paged to 2 adults and 3 children stuck up the cliff at Capstone Parade. On arrival, the casualties were found climbing down from where they had been, on the south side of Capstone.
Met by police, they were given some suitable advice before they left the scene.

📟 26/07/26 - 20:27 UTC
Paged to reports of suspected ordnance on Woolacombe Beach, between certain beach huts. The team arrived on scene and made a thorough search of the reported location, extending to 200m from the hut. Nothing was found and the team stood down.

📟 29/07/26 - 19:22 UTC
Paged to reports of something in the water off Woolacombe.
The team met up with the first informant who pointed the item out, and directed RNLI Ilfracombe to the object which was the Morte Stone buoy. The team stood down returning to station. A call made with good intent.

📟 31/07/26 - 13:09 UTC
The team was paged along with North Devon RNLI Lifeguards and Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team to reports of a male having a medical episode on Grunta Beach.

After arriving on scene and assessing the casualties condition with paramedics, the Devon Air Ambulance was deployed, landing on the beach allowing them to take casualty to hospital for further care. We wish them a speedy recovery

📟 08/08/26 - 16:34 UTC
Paged to assist our colleagues from Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team with the search of a missing 9 YO at Saunton Sands.
Happily, while the crew was making their way to the incident location, the child was found safe and well, and the teams were stood down.

📟 12/08/26 - 10:31 UTC
Paged to reports of 5 Kayakers in difficulty at Combe Martin.
As the team was progressing to the beach area, information came in that the kayakers had been assisted to shore by two members of the public who were paddle boarding.
After establishing contact with the 5 kayakers, everyone was found to be safe and uninjured and the team stood down.
A huge thanks to the two paddleboarders for their actions.

📟 12/08/26 - 20:08 UTC
Paged to reports of a yacht in difficulties in the Inner Harbour.
After arriving on scene, the reported vessel was found and the people on board were spoken to. They were not in difficulty and were surprised that we had been called.
The first informant had good intent, but everything was found to be in order. The team returned to base.

📟 13/08/26 - 15:11 UTC
Paged to assist the ambulance service with casualty extraction after reports of a person having a severe allergic reaction on Combe Martin Beach. As the team arrived, the casualty had already been taken to the ambulance and was receiving the necessary care. The team stood down and returned to station.

📟 25th January 09:49

Paged along with our colleagues from Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team, to reports of a 36y old male who had been cut off at the south end of Puttsborough beach after receiving a head injury while surfing.

After locating the casualty and assessing their location, along with colleagues from RNLI Appledore Lifeboat Station, the best method of extracting the casualty was decided to be with a rope rescue set up.

This was swiftly assembled and a rope technician descended to the casualty, placed them into a rescue harness, and the teams recovered both the casualty and technician back to the top of the cliff area, into the warmth of the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trusts' ambulance.

Regular training with our flank teams help keep our skills up to date and enable us to work together to achieve quick, positive results.

Remember, if you see anyone in trouble on the coast or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

The team was paged to lend support to Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue, responding to calls that a person had fallen into the water at East Lyn River, opposite the Lynmouth Coastguard station.

The Coastguard teams worked alongside CG Helicopter 387, Lynton Fire and Rescue, Fire Specialist Rescue and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust to affect a rescue of the casualty.

A rope rescue system was put in place and specialist rope technicians from Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue, with the assistance of Mullacott officers, brought the casualty to safety and into the care of the ambulance service.

A great joint emergency services rescue with a positive outcome.

Remember, if you see anyone in trouble on the coast or in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
