The Association of Cycle Traders, known as the ACT, is the largest cycle trade organisation in the UK

The ACT is a membership organisation representing the interests of over 3000 specialist cycle retailers and their supply partners throughout the UK. Established early last century, the ACT have been promoting specialist bike retailers for over 80 years and are committed to the support and longevity of speciality cycle retailing, delivering width of consumer choice, value and service. For some people, an e-bike is more than a convenient way to travel. It can mean getting to work, attending medical appointments or staying connected to friends and family.

Merseyrail is planning to enforce a ban on non-folding e-bikes, which could make those journeys harder, particularly for older and disabled riders. Safety matters, but blanket bans are not the answer.

Today's Budget brings welcome news for independent cycle shops.

From April 2027, the threshold for Small Business Rates Relief will rise from £12,000 to £18,000 in rateable value for qualifying retail properties.

ACT parent company, Bira, have been highlighting the mountain cost pressures facing independents and calling for meaningful action.

Today's announcement is a step forward. But with employment and energy costs continuing to squeeze businesses, there's still more more to do.
