Two Pendle Councillors Join Conservatives in Commitment to Community-Focused Action

Councillors Bryony Hartley and David Hartley have announced their decision to leave the Liberal Democrats and join the Conservative group on Pendle Borough Council.

The move follows a period of reflection and recent events within the Liberal Democrat group, which have prompted the councillors to consider where they feel best placed to represent their communities and deliver positive change for residents.

Cllr Ash Sutcliffe, Leader of the Pendle Conservative group, welcomed the decision.

“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Bryony and David to the Conservative group. I understand that this won’t have been an easy decision for them, and I respect the thought they have clearly put into it.

“Both councillors want to be part of a group that puts communities first, focuses on practical action and works hard to deliver results for residents. These are values we share, and I’m pleased they feel the Conservative group is the right place for them to continue their work.

“Local government should be about listening to residents, tackling the issues that matter to them and getting things done. Our focus is on working constructively, supporting our local communities and delivering action for everyone across Pendle.”

Cllr Bryony Hartley and Cllr David Hartley said:

“This has not been an easy decision, nor one we have taken lightly. We have both given our time, energy and commitment to the Liberal Democrats because we believe local politics should, above everything else, be about serving our communities and listening to the people who put their trust in us.

“Recent events have caused us to seriously reflect on whether the direction being taken locally still represents the communities we serve. We have listened to residents and heard their frustrations and concerns. Those conversations have mattered enormously to us.

“Ultimately, our community comes first. This decision is about the future and about being able to continue representing local people effectively, while working alongside colleagues in the Conservative group. The badge may change, but our commitment to our communities does not.

“We are looking forward to this next chapter and will continue to do what we believe elected representatives should do: turn up, listen, work hard and put the people we represent first.”

Welcome to my shiny, new councillor page!

I’ve served on both Colne Town Council and Pendle Council for years and thought now was a good time to share all the projects I am involved in.

I co-founded Colne Youth Action Group with Cllr Sarah Cockburn-Price and am known for my love of numbers. 🤓

Be prepared for some alarming posts about Pendle Council, which is now potentially not being abolished and yet has been burning 🔥 through its Reserves at an alarming rate! 😬

Good news for the Weekend! The End is Nigh!

Don't worry, it isn't AI induced Armageddon😲, it is the imminent end of the wretched roadworks on Cottontree Lane!

The Lovely Iain from United Utilities has been back on the 'phone and has followed up with an email. Here it is:

"I can confirm the sewer has been repaired and a new chamber built, the excavation is backfilled and is ready for reinstatement.

Reinstatement of the sewer repair patch and the consequential damage will be completed over the weekend.

Saphire Solutions and Pipeworks support will be onsite on Monday from 5.30 a.m. to remove barriers and signage and re-open the road.

Traffic Management Teams will also be onsite to remove the signage and diversion.

The first bus is due to leave Trawden (M3 service) at 6.26 a.m. and the road will be accessible for it to operate as per the timetable.

The shuttle bus will remain in place on Saturday and Sunday as previously advised."

We thank local residents again for their patience whilst we have carried out the necessary repair.”

Antisocial Driving/Racing Late at Night and the Wee Small Hours

Residents have been concerned for years about the rise in antisocial/racing drivers. This prompted the Pendle Conservatives on Pendle Council’s Colne and District Area Committee to put in a bid for three Speed Indicator Devices to be shared between Colne, Trawden and Foulridge. These SPIDS provide data monthly to the Police and are now managed by Colne Town Council. The speeds recorded are horrendous - we have seen over 70 mph in 20 mph zones! It is not only loud and annoying, but really dangerous too.

Councillor Ash Sutcliffe chairs the Colne Community Safety Partnership and the residents tell the Police the same story monthly. The next one is this Thursday at 5 p.m. at Colne Town Hall - all welcome.

Cllr Alexander Hustwit has begun a Cross Border Anti Speeding Initiative (CBAS) with Yorkshire councillors who suffer from the same problem in a bid to lobby for average speed cameras.

We’d like all residents to report these racers online too. Even if you cannot get a registration plate (they are too fast, tbf!), please report the time and locations via the link below - together we can really put a focus on this problem and make our area a no go area for these dangerous drivers.

In the last week, matters have escalated. We have all heard or seen these lunatics. The Colne and West Craven Police Neighbourhood Team have reported all this to the area’s Traffic Operations sergeant who promised to escalate and mount operations.

In addition, David Cockburn-Price is planning to put in a new bid for these out of hours operations following a successful model at Keighley Town Council. Let’s hope the other councillors choose to support this.
