Never far from a nice weekend walk, especially at this time of year with colourful trees, scrunchy leaves and fabulous fungi. Today a simple 9 miles in the Ticknall/Calke abbey area.

🌿 A Peak District Classic: Lathkill Dale & Magpie Mine 🥾
Just wrapped up a brilliant 9-mile loop near Bakewell, and this one is a must-do! If you’re looking for that perfect mix of natural beauty and fascinating history, the Lathkill Dale and Magpie Mine trail is exactly what you need.

The walk starts out on the open, rolling pastures of Sheldon Moor before dropping down into Lathkill Dale. It’s easy to see why this is a National Nature Reserve—the limestone scenery is stunning, and the valley is incredibly peaceful.

The contrast as you head toward the end of the walk is what really makes this route special. Moving from the lush greenery of the dale up to the rugged, atmospheric ruins of Magpie Mine feels like a total journey through time. That 18th-century engine house and chimney are such an impressive sight and a real testament to Derbyshire’s rich mining heritage.
