The mini-meadows have now had their annual cut. We have to wait until May next year to see them at their best again.
The photo shows an unexpected, but welcome sight at one of the mini-meadow locations next to the village pond, a fine display of Artists bracket fungus. This is the fruiting body of the fungus that is consuming the last remains of the copper beech which once graced this spot.

Though there has been much reporting nationally and locally about the risk of wildfires.
It is worth reminding everyone not to light any fires outdoors, however unlikely you think the risk maybe.
Wildfires are a risk to life, property and nature.
So when visiting the countryside and any of the wildlife sites within the parish, be mindful of the drought conditions now in effect.

As the hot weather is set to continue until the end of this week, please spare a thought for our wildlife.
To avoid dehydration leave out a shallow dish of water in a shady spot, your local wildlife will really appreciate it!

It has been a while since the last post, but this has not meant that there has not been anything happening. Over the winter much work has been taking place by the parish wildlife team. Despite the long periods of wet weather progress is being made to help nature and make the parish a better place for all.
With the assistance of a Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteer, work has been taking place at Bascote Road Scrubs Community Nature Reserve, Whites Spinney and in the SE corner of the village pond. Tasks have included constructing new rustic fencing, vegetation clearance, litter picking, river monitoring, and sowing wildflower seeds.
The parish Pond Warden has been busy working on the village pond having spent many hours behind the scenes, the fruits of which will become clear as the year progresses.
With spring approaching we would encourage everyone to find time to go out and explore what nature has to offer within our "wild parish".😀
