This month we are supporting Keep Britain Tidy in their Fight Fly-tipping Fortnight!!

This national campaign tackling fly-tipping, is running from Monday 12th to Sunday 25th October https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/fight-fly-tipping-fortnight-2026

Around 38% of fly-tipping incidents are linked to unlicensed ‘rogue traders’, who lure people with cheap deals on social media and then dump waste illegally.

This year, Keep Britain Tidy is exposing ‘The Great Rubbish Removal Scam’ to help people recognise the warning signs, understand the risks and take three simple steps to avoid a .

Don't fall for a

Rogue waste traders don’t necessarily look like criminals. They can hide in plain sight behind professional-looking online adverts, five-star reviews, tempting prices and promises of quick rubbish removal. Don’t just trust the ad. Check the trader. A cheap, convincing or professional-looking advert does not necessarily mean that the operator is legitimate.

Three simple steps

Protect yourself, your community and your local environment by making three simple checks:

* Ask for a waste carrier licence
* Check the number on the Environment Agency’s public register or call 0300 065 3000.
* Check you’ll get a receipt

If someone won't give you the information you need, don't give them your rubbish. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!

And if you spot any incidents of fly-tipping, please report this to Wakefield Council on 0345 8 506 506 or at https://myaccount.wakefield.gov.uk/

Fly-tipping is a for all of us. For the public, for councils, for communities and for the environment. It’s time we all took action to protect the places we love.

The Parish Council met for its October meeting last night. Although we had no members of the public present, our District Councillor Gilly Womack Featherstone Ward 6 Reform UK Councillors shared a couple of concerns from her surgery prior to the meeting. As a result, we will be working with Gilly and her colleagues to arrange a follow up meeting with the Wakefield Council Highways Team to discuss the signs and lines outside Sharlston Community School and the speed and weight limits on the Green - both issues we have been trying to resolve for many years.

Alongside this, Parish Councillors considered queries from residents throughout the month and ongoing concerns including parking issues, overhanging trees, grant support, playground damage and loose horses, all which had received individual responses / signposting.

In the main meeting, Parish Councillors discussed ongoing projects such as recruitment, community planter provision, wildflower planting, litter & dog-fouling prevention, the new farming heritage bench (watch this space!) and solar power for Sharlston SID. An update on allotment provision and management was considered and Cllr Nicholson gave a concise report on her recent 'Talking Tables' training which gave the Parish Council plenty of food for thought. Finally, resolutions were passed relating to winter gritting, Christmas Events and Remembrance Sunday.

Remember that any resident can attend our monthly meetings to share concerns, ask question or simply just find out what is going on - the first Monday of every month from 6.30 pm at Sharlston Community Centre Or if you'd like to know how to get involved in our different projects as a sponsor or volunteer, drop us a line at [email protected]

The Parish Council is often asked about how residents can get involved without committing to being a councillor 🤔

Whilst we do have a number of vacancies for parish councillors, we understand that can be daunting if you don't really understand what is involved 🤳

As a result, we have created a list of our sponsorship & volunteering opportunities so you can see just how many ways you can get involved and make a difference to the village you live and work in 💪

We always want to do more to improve Sharlston and with your help, we can make this happen 🫵

If you are a student, please speak to your school or college about how you can use your volunteering hours with us. If you're currently employed, ask your employer whether they provide paid time off for volunteering - many workplaces now encourage or even reward staff to undertake volunteering 🤩
Or if you just want to meet new people and try something new, please consider getting in touch!

However, you decide to get involved, we'd love to work with you and look forward to hearing from you! 🤝

Yes we know there’s another heatwave on its way 🔥😅but the Parish Council hasn’t got time to sunbathe…. We’re making Christmas plans ❄️⛄🎅🎄🔔

Here are the final details for all our Christmas events so, in between your summer holiday plans, please make sure you have the following dates in on your festive calendar ☃📅

🪧Christmas Meal & entertainment for our older & vulnerable residents – Thursday, 26th November 2026 at the Stables, White Horse (Please note change of date & venue) 🍽🎅🏻🍷This event is by invite only and we will be contacting previous guests and eligible residents very shortly.

🪧Christmas Singalong & festive refreshments - Friday, 18th December 2026 – gathered around the Christmas tree at the White Horse 👩‍🎤🧤🧣This year we are thrilled to welcome local entertainer Johnny Evans back to lead us in singing a selection of traditional and modern Christmas favourites followed by festive refreshments to warm us up afterwards. Wrap up, dig out your best glow sticks & Christmas lights and bring your family & friends to kick off the festive season in style!

🪧Santa Tractor Trail (route to be confirmed early December 2026) - Monday, 21st December 2026🎅🏻🍬🚜 This is fast proving a favourite event in family calendars, and we are thrilled to host Santa in Sharlston again this year, just before he gets too busy on his travels around the world. Make sure you get your spot to see him travel by and hopefully distribute a few pre-Christmas gifts for all the good girls & boys in the village!

Please remember though that to bring all this festive fun, we do require some helping hands if possible. If you would like to support us and get involved in bringing Christmas to Sharlston in 2026, please read on:

🫵are you a local business looking for exposure? We have opportunities to sponsor elements of our Christmas offer and would love to hear from you if you'd like to work with us!

💪do you have time to volunteer to support our events, either in the run up to them or on the day? We have lots of roles with as much or little commitment as you can offer - let us know if you'd like to get involved!

👂Can you spread the word? We know not everyone uses social media so can you let others know what we have planned and ask them if they'd like to come along or get involved?

We are so excited to share our plans with you and hope to see our wonderful village turn out for Christmas 2026! Keep listening for further updates! 👂🤳🎅🏻
