Usk Castle Privately owned ruined castle and grounds. Open Sundays & Bank holidays 10.30am - 4.30pm April-September.

Usk Castle stands on a hill overlooking the town of Usk, on a site already used for many centuries to guard the river crossing, the castle was first mentioned in 1138, and the Norman gatehouse was built around the 12th century by the de Clare family. The castle was strengthened by William Marshall, who had proved himself in tournaments sufficiently to marry Isabella, a de Clare heiress. He was famous for his skill in castle building – Pembroke, Chepstow to name just a few - so the design for the Garrison Tower at Usk, where the wall-walk passes the tower to give it greater protection, was likely to be his work. The Battle of Usk in 1405 marked the beginning of the end for the Welsh rebellion, when the English forces surprised the besieging Welsh, pursued them across the river and defeated them. The castle then remained in ruins for several centuries, the gate house being used for many purposes including a school at one time. Usk Castle came into private stewardship in 1905 and has since been a family home, yet lovingly conserved and open for all to enjoy.

A first for us- we are fully booked for next year before Christmas- and we already have some bookings for 2028! We are only a small team and have to respect the ancient nature of the castle, our neighbours and allow time for visitors- so only run an exclusive number of weddings and events each year the proceeds of which go straight back to maintaining this beautiful piece of history.
If you are thinking of hosting a wedding or event with us please contact [email protected].

Loving the autumnal evenings in the castle gardens- the border now being cut back for winter but still some beautiful colours. The stag’s horn looks especially afire at the foot of the keep at the moment.

When the Virginia creeper matches the wedding colour scheme… our last wedding of the season- congratulations Holly and Alex! And don’t worry the creeper is to be remove shortly to prevent damage to the stonework, but it does look rather lovely right now.

What a beautiful day to say goodbye to a dear friend David Collard. Many friends, family and well wishers gathered in the Tithe Barn in celebration of his varied and interesting life. We certainly are grateful for his dedication to Usk Castle Friends and the Castle in general, as well as being a family friend for a great many years. Thank you, and rest in peace David.

****LAST PUBLIC OPEN DAY BEFORE WINTER.***
Today is the last of our open Sundays before we close for winter. The castle is closed for a private event next Sunday and then it gets a bit too chilly for our volunteers to wait on the gates for visitors.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful volunteers for all their help this year- it is very much appreciated. You can still visit by appointment over the winter months by emailing [email protected] with at least 48 hours notice and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

This is a bit of a marmite post. We have giant hogweed at the castle, it has been there for decades, some love it because of the beautiful structural flower heads against the Garrison Tower and others are worried it will spread or can be harmful. There is a sign to say the sap is irritant, it can cause burns, but it is fenced off, and as long as you don’t touch it-it won’t hurt you.
We take the flower heads off before they go to seed so it won’t spread anywhere else, and this majestic giant plant can continue guarding the tower, without hurting anyone or becoming an uncontrollable menace.
