šŸ’™ SAFE Skill #4:Have a Default Plan

Here’s a question for you…

If something suddenly made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe where you are right now, would you know what to do next?

It’s something security and close protection professionals are trained to consider regularly.

It’s called contingency planning, thinking ahead about your options before you actually need them.

And it’s a simple habit that anyone can develop.

Imagine you’re walking through town, waiting for a bus or enjoying an evening out.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

šŸ“ WHERE? – Where could I go if I needed somewhere safer? A staffed shop, cafĆ© or another busy public place?

šŸ‘„ WHO? – Who could I approach for assistance? A member of staff, security officer or someone I trust?

šŸ“± HOW? – How would I get help? Is my phone accessible? Do I know how to contact emergency services?

🚶 WHAT NEXT? – If my circumstances changed, what other options would I have?

You don’t need an elaborate plan. Sometimes it’s as simple as knowing there’s an open shop nearby or identifying someone you could approach for help.

The important thing is having options.

One of the key principles used by security and close protection professionals is being proactive rather than reactive.

Thinking ahead can help reduce hesitation, support quicker decisions and give you greater confidence when navigating everyday situations.

And remember, having a plan doesn’t mean you expect something bad to happen.

It’s no different from knowing where the fire exits are or having a spare tyre in your car.

Preparation isn’t paranoia. It’s confidence.

šŸ’™ SAFE – Stay Aware. Feel Empowered.

šŸ’¬ Today’s SAFE Challenge: Next time you’re out, ask yourself one simple question:

ā€œIf I needed help right now, where would I go?ā€

You might be surprised how quickly this small habit becomes second nature.

Remember: Your safety is never your responsibility alone, and nobody is ever to blame for another person’s harmful actions.

WE WANT TO HEAR YOUR HONEST OPINION.

Following our appearance in the feature on Bournemouth by ITV News, it’s clear that there are questions being asked about Bournemouth and the issues affecting our town.

But we want to hear from YOU.

Are things heading in the right direction? Do you feel safe when you’re out and about? What do you think needs to change? And what do you think Bournemouth is getting right?

We know not everyone will agree, and that’s absolutely fine. We want honest opinions, different perspectives and an open conversation about the place we all share.

No question is off the table. So, Bournemouth, let’s talk… what’s REALLY going on in our town?

Not quite as exciting as the football, but we were out!

Another busy evening in town, with plenty of supporters out and about!

Despite the weather, our amazing Safeguard team were out in force, waterproofs on and ready to go. It was great to have positive interactions with business owners, door staff and members of the public throughout the patrol.

As always, it’s about being visible, approachable and helping everyone feel part of ourr community.

A big thank you to our volunteers for giving up their time and being out there, whatever the weather.

Who watched that match? Well done AFC Bournemouth! 17 years ago I never thought we would see this!

What an amazing day for the cherries!

I remember the great escape a few years ago, and now look at them! Definitely a night to remember.

So what are you score predictions for later? I don’t mind as long as it’s a win!

Good luck AFC Bournemouth, everyone is behind you.

A lovely calm night on patrol!

It was great to see so many university students out in fancy dress, enjoying themselves and making the most of the evening. The town had a really positive atmosphere, with no issues to report.

We also had a lovely chat with PC Harold, who stopped for a catch-up while out on patrol. Always good to see our teams connecting and working together in the community.

Thankfully, the rain held off too, making for a much more pleasant evening out on the streets!

We love seeing Bournemouth busy, happy and enjoying itself.

What’s your favourite thing about seeing the town come alive on a night out? Let us know in the comments!

For this weeks Why, it’s one of our admin team, Jo. I’ll let her do the talking:

I’m Jo, and this is my ā€˜Why’. ā¤ļø

I joined Safeguard because I’ve had two really horrendous experiences that I never, ever want another parent to have to go through.

As a mum, there are some words you never forget.

ā€œMum, I’ve been stabbed. Centre of my chest.ā€ 😱

Thankfully, it was winter and he was wearing three layers of clothing. If it had been summer, the outcome could have been very different.

But I still get to hug my son. ā¤ļø

Then there was another night when he was drugged and mugged in a club in Bournemouth.

All I had was a garbled phone call at 5am.

I drove down there trying to find him, not knowing where he was or what had happened. Three hours later, he appeared. He didn’t know what had happened to him or even where he had been.

Those experiences stay with you.

So when I found Safeguard, I knew I wanted to be involved.

I’m predominantly part of the admin team, but I’ve also been out on patrol. And I’ve seen first-hand why what we do matters.

I’ve read the comments saying we’re a waste of time, that we make no difference, that we’re just wasting shoe leather.

Well, I’ve seen the difference.

One evening, a group of 6–8 males were harassing a young woman. She made contact with us and, as we started to approach the group, they ran.

Did we know exactly what might have happened if we hadn’t been there?

No.

But we do know that, in that moment, our presence made a difference.

For me, this isn’t about trying to be heroes.

It’s about people being able to go out, enjoy their evening and, most importantly, get home safely to their families.

Because I know exactly how it feels to be the mum waiting for that phone call.

That’s my Why.

What’s yours? Could you help us make a difference too? ā¤ļø

LET’S TALK ABOUT OUR TOWN!

Bournemouth is a place we all share, whether we live here, work here or visit. From our town centre to our seafront, it’s the people who make our community what it is.

At Safeguard Community Support, we believe that looking out for one another and building a stronger community starts with all of us.

So, we want to hear from YOU!

If you could make one positive change to Bournemouth or Poole to make it an even better place to live, work and visit, what would it be?

More community events? Cleaner streets? More activities for young people? Or simply more people looking out for each other?

Drop your ideas in the comments. We’re listening!
