WALSINGHAM PICTURE PALACE FILM NIGHT at Walsingham Parish Hall
A very special evening of entertainment.
A chance to see this unforgettable cult 1979 movie, a special screening as part of the BFI’s Rip it Up season. This is a new nationwide season from the BFI Film Audience Network running from May to October, exploring how British film and television have captured youth culture across seven decades.
‘Quadrophenia’ immortalises the tribal rivalries of mods and rockers, against a soundtrack of The Who album. It’s a film of its time, the 70s, which dramatises the period 1964 to 1966, when teenagers rioted in British seaside towns. Violence flared between mods and rockers, two youth movements that were connected in the press with drug-taking, vandalism and delinquency.
In the film, angst-ridden London youth Jimmy Cooper (a very youthful-looking Phil Daniels!) escapes the drudgery of his postal job as a member of the Mods, the sharply dressed gang constantly at odds with their rivals, the Rockers. When Mods and Rockers clash in Brighton, it leads to both trouble and an encounter with the lovely Steph (Leslie Ash). Returning to London, Jimmy, who aspires to be like Mod leader Ace Face (played by Sting!), becomes even more disillusioned.
Plus SHORT: ‘Forever Young’, put together from the East Anglian Film Archive, from an extraordinary range of local news and documentaries shot throughout our region. The film celebrates the diversity of youth culture from the early 1970s through to the 1990s.
ALSO Q&A with Guy Martin. Guy is director of Reel Connections, a Community Interest Company that uses film, music and the creative arts to connect people, groups and communities across Norfolk and the South East.
