As children start Reception, it's so important to support families to keep reading together for pleasure 📚

BookTrust research shows reading enjoyment drops between ages 4-5, at the same time as children start school - it's a time when reading experiences shift, routines come under pressure, and different types of reading need to be balanced.

But it's also a time of opportunity! ⭐

Families are open to support: 64% of parents and carers of 5-year-olds say they want more support to help their child spend time with books and stories.

Support can act as an equaliser: Families don’t all start from the same place. Accessible, practical and reassuring support can help level children’s reading experiences.

It's a key moment to embed routines and build relationships: The time when children start school is an opportunity to build relationships with families, strengthen home-school links, and embed shared reading from the start.

👉 And we can help! We've teamed up with Wandle English Hub to create Sharing Stories at Home - free resources for schools designed to support families to enjoy reading for pleasure at home:

- A workshop template 📋
- Guidance for you ✏️
- Information for parents and carers 💡
- Videos with families 📺

We hope you find them really useful - link in comments!

Do you know a child who can't get enough of Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler?

Donaldson and Scheffler’s body of work is packed with similarly warm stories, but once you’ve explored all of them, what to read next?

See our suggestions in the comments! 🧹

Now we are 100!

The original Winnie the Pooh and his friends are now in New York Public Library. Roo was believed to have been lost in an English apple orchard in the 1930’s. Queen Camilla gifted a replica Roo in 2026.
Happy birthday Winnie and friends! 🎂🎂🎂
