We were tasked late last night to staff the Helicopter Landing Site at West Cumberland Hospital North Cumbria Integrated Care, for the arrival of Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 899 from Prestwick.

The helicopter was tasked to transport a patient for onward care, from a tasking with Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team.

We cleared the landing site, ensuring there was no debris that could present a hazard to the aircraft, then marked the perimeter until the aircraft had safely landed. Assisting the aircrew, we transferred the casualty in a stretcher to the awaiting North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust to A&E.

๐Ÿค” We sometimes receive comments asking: โ€œWhy doesnโ€™t the helicopter just land on the helipad or a surrounding safe area without you?โ€

Our HM Coastguard Sikorsky S-92A, AgustaWestland 189 and the newly introduced AgustaWestland 139 helicopters are large in size. Each are powered by twin engines, producing extremely powerful downdrafts during landing and take-off.
Due to their size the helicopter could pose a danger to people and animals if they are in the immediate vicinity, as well as cause a distraction for the crew whilst trying to land safely.
Also, with the helicopter in most cases landing and needing to keep their Rotors Running (Turning & Burning) during patient transfer, our presence in controlling the landing site and undertaking a swift transfer of the casualty into/out of the aircraft is essential for safety.

๐Ÿ’ก DID YOU KNOW?

HM Coastguard operates the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) for the United Kingdom.

The ARCC is responsible for tasking all search and rescue helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, providing 24/7 coverage across the UK.

The ARCC coordinates closely with police, ambulance, fire, and other emergency services and monitors incidents across the UK Search and Rescue Region, covering approximately 2 million square miles.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ ๐ŸŠ Water Search & Rescue was on the agenda for team training last night.
We chose Whitehaven Marina as our area of operation.
We started by recapping on basics such as safety of ourselves, followed by Hierarchy of Water Rescue. Then, applying operational learning, we reran some historic rescues that we've undertaken at Whitehaven of the years.

We were tasked after a 999 call was received by our Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Belfast Coastguard, reporting a red distress flare sighted off Whitehaven Marina. The team took up vantage points between Kells and Bransty, whilst other officers liaised with the first informant and some spoke with Marina staff.
We were stood down once our enquiries confirmed it to be fireworks which had been fired from West Pier.

Whilst concluding the first tasking, we were retasked to assist Cumbria Police with a high risk missing person search in the area of Whitehaven.
A command point was established from which our Officer in Charge deployed and coordinated 5 x search teams made up off officers from both Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team & Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team, covering areas between Whitehaven & Parton.

A request was made for St Bees RNLI to launch and assist with a shoreline search, along with Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199 from prestwick.
Police located the missing person inland and all assets were stood down.

We also did a quick assembly, functional test, and inventory check of both our Remote Radio Site and Incident Command Support setup. โ›บ๏ธ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

This setup provides us, our wider flank teams and partner agencies with an off-grid, fully powered and sheltered base, from which we can command and control search and rescue efforts, or simply provide welfare to our teams on protracted incidents.
It can be deployed anywhere we can get our 4x4 off-road vehicle.
