The Mercian Regiment The MERCIAN Regiment is an Armoured Infantry Unit of the formed in 2007. We also cover the Black Country and the Wirral.

The Mercian Regiment is the Heart of England’s Infantry, recruiting from the five counties which formed the ancient Kingdom of Mercia: Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. We formed on 1st September 2007 through the amalgamation of three existing Regiments. The Regiment has deployed on various operational deployments since its formation, making us one of the most operationally experienced regiments in the British Army. We work and fight as a proud, close knit family and live to our motto 'Stand Firm Strike Hard'. Through it, we deliver success on operations around the world. Professional, determined and fierce, Mercian soldiers are renowned for their professionalism and courage when deployed, and our reputation marks us out as one of the most effective and modern Infantry units in the British Army. The Regiment has deployed on exercise to Cyprus, Lithuania, Uganda, Croatia, Kenya, Canada and more.

For one private, it was a particularly special occasion, as he joined The Mercian Regiment; his father's old regiment." 🦅

Between 2006-2007, soldiers from the 1st Battalion, The Staffordshire Regiment deployed on Op TELIC 9 with the 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

Carl Gardner, a recently retired LE Officer with the LANCS, has published a book of his memoirs of his time in Iraq on Op TELIC 9, detailing his experiences of the operation while working alongside soldiers and officers from The Staffordshire Regiment.

Synopsis:
“Op TELIC 9 – Arnhem in Basra” is the incredible story of Arnhem Company’s lethal tour of Basra City in Southern Iraq. It's November 2006 and Arnhem Company is part of an armoured infantry unit, deploying to Iraq as part of The 2nd Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment’s seven-month operational tour.

Once they land in Iraq, they are under constant rocket attacks from the Iraqi insurgents. They have to complete their in-country training before patrolling the lethal streets of Basra City. It does not get any easier as the insurgents attack them with machine guns, handheld rockets, and the devastating roadside bombs.

It’s a case of step up or go home in a body bag. Some of the attacks are so aggressive that the only way the soldiers on the ground can explain it, is to tell people at home to watch “Black Hawk Down” the movie. This sustained fighting comes with a cost as 29 officers and soldiers get killed over the next seven months, with many, many more receiving life changing injuries.

Private Derby attended the annual Malvern Hills Challenge over the weekend. 🐏

He "apparently" walked one of the routes himself... or at least that's what he would have you believe... 🤔

The annual challenge sees participants walk along the Malvern Hills on either a 9 or 18 km route to raise funds for Help For Heroes. 🏃

💪

On Saturday I visited the Malvern Hills for the annual Malvern Hills Challenge, which sees participants walk along the Malvern Hills on either a 9 or 18 km route to raise funds for Help For Heroes. 🏃

I was exhausted after crossing the finish line, but I earned my rosette fair and square! 😤

in 2007, the Mercian Regiment was formed at Tamworth Castle. This was the result of the amalgamation of the Cheshire Regiment, the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and the Staffordshire Regiment. Present was the Regiment's then Colonel in Chief, HRH The Prince of Wales; now HM King Charles III.

In the years since our formation, the Mercian Regiment has gone on to be known as one of the most operationally deployed Regiments in the Infantry, while also being coined 'The Heart of England's Infantry'. Although we have achieved many great things as the Mercian Regiment, we must not forget our 330+ years of history that have shaped our existence.

To all our Mercian family out there, we thank you for your support. And to all of our soldiers, we thank you for protecting our country so our families can stay safe.
