👑🎉 THE PARTY THAT NEARLY BANKRUPTED SUDELEY 🎉👑

In 1592, Sudeley Castle hosted a party for Elizabeth I that was so extravagant that it reportedly came close to ruining the family who paid for it.

That summer, Elizabeth I arrived at Sudeley during her royal progress through England. It was her third visit to the castle, where she was welcomed by Giles Brydges, 3rd Baron Chandos.

Hosting the Queen was one of the greatest honours an Elizabethan nobleman could receive, but it was also an enormous financial undertaking. Elizabeth travelled with a substantial court, and her host was responsible for providing accommodation, food, drink and entertainment throughout the visit.

Lord Chandos was determined not to be outdone.

The resulting celebrations lasted for three days and marked the anniversary of England’s defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Nobles and members of the local gentry flocked to Sudeley, where they reportedly enjoyed roast oxen, plentiful supplies of w**e and b**r, music, dancing, performances and an impressive firework display.

One of the most elaborate entertainments featured Lord Chandos’s daughter, Elizabeth Brydges, appearing as the mythological nymph Daphne. She evidently impressed the Queen and later joined the royal household as a Maid of Honour.

The occasion has since been described as one of the longest parties in history.

It was spectacular, politically significant and an extraordinary demonstration of loyalty to the Crown. It was also phenomenally expensive. While no definitive total survives, the visit is reputed to have placed such a considerable financial burden on the Brydges family that it almost brought them to ruin.

Sudeley has welcomed many royal visitors during its 1000 year history, but perhaps none came with a bill quite like Elizabeth I.

Next time you walk through the castle grounds, imagine them filled with courtiers, banqueting, performances and three uninterrupted days of Elizabethan celebration.
