Thomas Tomkys was the first to be buried in the WBG, but for decades his grave was lost, after some "digging" into the records he has been rediscovered. Being in the corner 18 ft from the south fence and 13ft 8 inches from the West wall. A tile has now been placed there to mark his grave.

Wolverhampton's 'rich and vibrant history' to go on display Wolverhampton City Archives' Local History Fair will return on 11 October.

To mark the 170th Anniversary of the consecration of Wednesfield New Burial Ground on 2nd October, the Friends of Wednesfield Burial Ground are proud to be showcasing a range of creative work at Wolverhampton Central Library, in the first-floor balcony display cabinets, from now until Thursday 9 October.

At the heart of the display is a stencilled tile installation created with the 2nd Wednesfield Explorers which was inspired by a fragment of Minton encaustic tile discovered at the site of the demolished chapel. The project counts towards the Explorers’ Creative Arts Activity Badge.

Also on show:
– A Victorian-style diorama co-created with Wednesfield History Society
– Photographs of the burial ground by local photographer Graham Stubbs
– Facts and information about the burial ground, including a plan of the foundations of the mortuary chapel.

This project is supported by Hands On Wednesfield and Creative Black Country as part of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places National Portfolio programme.
