Do you know what happens to your food waste once it’s collected?

Food waste collections are well underway in Adur and Worthing. Once collected by our teams your food waste is taken to the anaerobic digestion plant near Horsham, operated on behalf of West Sussex County Council.

At the plant, the waste undergoes anaerobic digestion, a process that converts waste into useful biofertiliser and renewable energy.

The biofertiliser is supplied to local farmers for use on their fields, while the energy generated powers the plant itself, with any surplus energy exported to the national grid to provide power for homes.

Watch our short video on what happens to your food waste after collection 👇

Don’t forget you can now recycle your Halloween pumpkins with your food waste! 🎃

If you are planning to carve pumpkins to decorate your home with this weekend, have you thought about what you’ll do with the leftover food?

You can find some delicious pumpkin recipes on the Love Food Hate Waste website here: https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/good-food-habits/halloween-make-most-your-pumpkin

When it’s time to say goodbye to your pumpkin lanterns these can also be chopped up and placed in your outside food waste bin or left on top if they are too large.

To double check what other food waste can go in your new bins, please visit https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/food-waste/ to have your questions answered.

The government has announced it will provide a decision on local government reorganisation (LGR) proposals in West Sussex between now and early 2027, with any new councils due to take over services in April 2029.

These proposals would replace the current county and district or borough council system with a single tier of unitary councils, each responsible for all council services in its area.

Did you know that you can recycle vapes through our kerbside waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) collection service?

Unfortunately, many vapes are still being thrown out with general waste - leading to an estimated 750kg of vapes per month ending up at Ford Materials Recycling Facility according to Biffa, which runs the site.

Vapes contain batteries and can easily catch fire when crushed or damaged during collection and processing, creating a serious fire risk for the people handling our waste, vehicles and facilities.

You can easily recycle vapes, as well as household batteries and broken small electronic items, like toasters, hairdryers and remote controls, as part of our WEEE collection service.

Simply place your items next to your refuse or recycling bin on your bin collection day and we will collect it for recycling. Small items like vapes and batteries can be placed in a small plastic bag so they don't fall out onto the road once in the collection cage on our vehicles.

Find out how the service works here: https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/recycling-and-waste/what-you-can-recycle/

Would you like to support tree planting today that could benefit your community for years to come? 🌳

By sponsoring a tree, you can help create a greener, healthier neighbourhood while supporting biodiversity, improving air quality and providing shade and cooling.

Our new tree sponsorship scheme is open to residents, community groups and businesses, with ‘instant impact’ trees being planted in local streets, parks and green spaces across Adur and Worthing.

It could be a way to celebrate a special moment, honour the memory of someone important, or simply make a positive investment in your local environment.

With more than 150 community-sponsored trees already planted across Worthing, we’re excited to be bringing the scheme in-house and introducing it to Adur for the first time.

Trees sponsored over the coming weeks will be planted this winter.

Over 1,600 Adur and Worthing residents will save hundreds off their water bills, thanks to our continued information sharing partnership with Southern Water.

As part of a data-sharing agreement, our Proactive team has provided Southern Water with the details of residents on low incomes or in receipt of benefits who may be eligible for a discount on their bills.

Southern Water has now begun contacting the 1,680 households we identified to let them know that they will be automatically moved to its cheaper Essentials tariff payment scheme.

The Essentials tariff is designed to help customers who are struggling to pay their water bills, by providing a discount of at least 45% for households with a low income or who are claiming Pension Credit.

To check if you could be eligible for the discount or if you are struggling to pay your water bill, please visit https://www.southernwater.co.uk/help-and-support/what-if-i-cant-pay-my-bill/.

⚠️ Jack on the Green event cancelled this Friday and Saturday ⚠️

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Jack on the Green events planned for this Friday and Saturday (23rd and 24th October) due to predicted high winds.

We do not take the decision to cancel events lightly and are sorry for any disappointment, but the yellow weather warning for high winds issued by the Met Office means that we cannot go ahead safely.

All ticket holders for Friday and Saturday will be contacted by email and will receive a full refund.

Currently the events planned for Sunday and Monday are not affected by the weather warning and will still go ahead.

We are also adding in extra time slots and an additional night on Tuesday (27th October) so that people who were booked on the cancelled dates can rebook tickets.

If you wish to attend on another day you can rebook tickets here:
