Quarantine can be a complex subject, and where the requirements and responsibilities fall can vary greatly depending on the individual situation and the location concerned. Whilst lots of quarantine requirements have fallen away, some haven’t, and there’s always the risk they could return.
Adam Briggs, Yacht Management Services Technical Officer, says “From a crewing perspective, as a general rule, any period of quarantine when traveling to or from the yacht should be treated as ‘in service’ of the yacht. The crew member should not be penalised for these periods and the associated costs where this is outside their control, for example government mandated or yacht policy quarantine. However, as always, there are some exceptions to this.”

Crew Quarantine – What We’ve Learned
With the 2022 Med season rapidly gathering pace Covid-considerations are still valid. While many countries no longer have any restrictions some are enforcing more severe quarantine requirements.

Adam Briggs, Yacht Management Services Technical Officer at Sarnia Yachts, advises that the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry published a Guidance Note this month regarding Seafarer’s Rest and Fitness for Duty.
Adam says “This Guidance Note reiterates the compulsory hours of work and rest as noted in the STCW code and whilst these are generally achievable on larger yachts with a larger crew complement it can be more problematic for smaller yachts where the requirements of the guests can result in a greater demand on fewer crew making it more challenging to adhere to the regulations.”

Bruce Maltwood and Louise Holloway are excited to be hosting a Sarnia Yachts table at the Superyacht Charities Ball at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton, in April.
Louise, Director of Yacht Management Services, says “It’s great to be able to support such a brilliant charity which has raised over £400,000 from within the Superyacht sector! Close to my heart is the SYC Action Fund that also exists to provide help to those who need it within our industry, with a specific focus on yacht crew.”
If you are going to be there too let us know, it would be great to say hi!

“Let our crew take care of yours” is the motto of Sarnia Yachts’ crew management department. Led by Louise Holloway, the division is one of Sarnia’s three core pillars – comprising Ownership, Management and Crew – and has been one of the busiest areas of the 50-year business during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Crew Management team is based across Sarnia Yachts’ Guernsey and Southampton offices. “Our job is to take care of the employment and payroll for crew on our fleet of yachts,” says Louise, Director of Yacht Management Services. “From the onboarding process to day-to-day support, we’re there for every step of a crew member’s journey.”

Emily Morris has joined the Yacht Management department within the Sarnia Yachts UK team based in Southampton. Her primary focus will be Yacht Registration and yacht certification/document compliance.
Emily’s career includes ten years at the Cayman Island Shipping Registry (“CISR”) office in Southampton, so she brings a wealth of knowledge around registration processes and yacht compliance. Emily’s role is to support the Ownership, Management & Crew arms of the business to ensure all yachts for which Sarnia Yachts carries one or more responsibilities for, are compliant at all times.
Tim Joyce, Sarnia Yachts CEO commented “Emily is a great addition to our Yacht Management business. To have someone who knows the inner workings and documentary requirements of one of the most successful non-EU Flag states for yachts, enhances and complements all the services we are able to provide to our clients, whether that is a one-off Yacht Registration or wider ongoing services. Emily’s knowledge and understanding is transferable to all the other flag states that Sarnia Yachts registers and maintains yachts at for our clients.”
Emily will be working closely with Bruce Maltwood who can advise clients where best to register their yachts. The factors in the choice of flag are complex. These might include; ownership, operation, UBO residence, construction of yacht, ability to meet the commercial codes of certain flag states, VAT, safe manning requirements and crew social security to name just a few. Choosing the wrong flag state can limit operational flexibility at best or worse have a negative financial impact for the owner.
