GNRF to EU: African Research Priorities Must Shape Global Partnerships

The GNRF hosted independent evaluators commissioned by the European Union (EU) to gather GNRF’s perspective and evidence for evaluating EU-funded portfolios in Africa. Dr Stephen Lewarne Webber, Team Lead for the Evaluation of the EU’s Multiannual Indicative Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, reiterated several initiatives supporting research and higher education in Africa, including the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) and the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme.

Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, Ag. Administrator highlighted a critical priority: African research priorities must help shape the partnerships and funding opportunities designed to support Africa. She underscored the need to strengthen opportunities for Ghanaian researchers, particularly early-career researchers, to establish international partnerships and access competitive research grants. Dr Webber was joined by Selom Apanya, Country Expert, Evaluation of the EU’s Multiannual Indicative Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Ghana National Research Fund made a strong case for research investment at the CSIR Scientific Conference 2026, held under the theme “Harnessing Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development.”

Ag. Deputy Administrator Prof. Shamsu-Deen Ziblim delivered an address on behalf of Ag. Administrator Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, outlining the Fund’s mandate, funding opportunities, and five national research missions: food systems transformation; climate and environmental sustainability; health innovation and biosecurity; digital and industrial transformation; and governance, policy, and social systems.

Prof. Ziblim emphasised that research funding must go beyond producing publications. The GNRF supports the full research pipeline, from discovery through to prototypes, technology transfer, and industry partnerships, ensuring that innovations reach markets and evidence informs national decisions.

Ag. Administrator Prof. Opoku Mensah also joined the conference’s opening activities on 14 October alongside the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Director-General and Board Chair of the CSIR, and leaders from state and private institutions.

GNRF joins the Innovation Agencies in Africa (IAA) Network

On the sidelines of the SGCI All Partners Forum in Windhoek, Namibia, the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF) attended the 4th Steering Committee Meeting of the Innovation Agencies in Africa (IAA) Network for the first time.

GNRF was formally welcomed as a member of the Network, which has grown from 9 to 12 member agencies since its last meeting in Pretoria in November 2025. The Gambia’s NRIF and Côte d’Ivoire’s FONSTI also joined, extending the Network’s reach across West and Central Africa.

The meeting brought together the heads of eleven national innovation agencies and was chaired by Ms Stella Soi Langat of the Kenya National Innovation Agency, with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), a founding partner, in attendance.

Membership of the IAA Network gives GNRF a direct link to peer agencies working to turn research into commercial outcomes, technology transfer and scaled innovation across the continent.
