GFZA participates in Africa Ports Forum

Accra, May 2026

The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) participated in the 7th Africa Ports Forum held from May 20–21, 2026, in Accra. The event, which was organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Transport, brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including AfCFTA, port authorities, shipping companies and logistics providers, to discuss the future of ports in Africa and the challenges they face.

Representing the GFZA on the panel discussion on “Port and Multimodal Corridors; connecting Africa or Creating Gaps in Regional Integration?”, the Deputy CEO (Finance & Administration), Mr. Musah Sibiri Hamidu, gave a brief overview of the Authority, highlighting its significant impact in connecting Ghana to global value chains and its commitment to free trade within the African market.

Mr. Musah reiterated that the Authority remains committed to the development of ports and trade corridors to enhance trade activities and reduce costs for its Free Zones Enterprises (FZEs). He further noted that the Authority, together with its sister agencies, remains committed to enhancing the region’s port capabilities in order to attract investment.

Speaking on the challenges of free trade corridors, Mr. Musah identified language barriers and the lack of ratification of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement by some member states as major obstacles. He observed that if all member states deliberately incorporate the AfCFTA Agreement into their national laws, the AfCFTA would become a more effective platform for trade integration.

He also revealed that the Free Zones Scheme is in the process of transitioning to the Special Economic Zone concept, which will allow more investors to locate in Ghana and boost investor confidence.

Also on the panel were representatives from Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), UNIDO, AfCFTA, World Bank, and LAPSSET.The event served as a hub of knowledge exchange and networking opportunities. Participants engaged in insightful discussions on innovations in port management, infrastructure development, and sustainable practices.

Other officials from the Authority included the Director of Administration, Hajia Hanatu Abubakar, as well as officers from the Corporate Affairs, PR & Aftercare, and Marketing & Investment Promotion Departments.
