BLACK STAR BALLOON TOUR KICKS OFF ACROSS 16 REGIONS TO CELEBRATE AND SUPPORT THE BLACK STARS

The Black Star Balloon Tour was officially launched today at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, marking the start of a nationwide initiative to celebrate Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars. The tour aims to do more than just showcase colorful balloons; it seeks to foster unity, patriotism, and pride among Ghanaians as they rally behind their team.

Spanning all sixteen regions of Ghana and extending into the diaspora, the tour is a strategic effort to gather support for the Black Stars as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. It represents a collective call to Ghanaians to come together in unwavering support of their team.

During the launch, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Chief Director of the Ministry, emphasized the significance of the tour, stating, “We are not just launching a balloon tour; we are launching a powerful reminder.” Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the initiative is about more than balloons in the sky. “In moments of national pride, our differences fade away, and the Black Stars become a symbol that unites us all,” she said. She noted that across homes, markets, offices, schools, and even remote communities, the Black Stars have long served as a shared source of hope, pride, and identity.

Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah explained that the balloon, which will travel through various regions, represents the aspirations of millions of Ghanaians. “It’s more than just an object in the sky; it embodies our collective dreams. Just as a balloon rises with air, our team thrives on the support, encouragement, and confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

She called on Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars, emphasizing that national achievement depends on collective effort. “If we want our team to soar, we must give it the lift it needs,” he urged.

The launch marks the beginning of a journey across Ghana, where the Black Star balloons will continue to symbolize hope, unity, and national pride. The tour aims to inspire Ghanaians to stand together and support their team every step of the way.

HON. KOFI ADAMS ADVOCATES FOR FREE MOVEMENT ACROSS AFRICA TO BOOST SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

Kigali, Rwanda - May 22, 2026 - Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams has called for a strategic initiative to propel sports development across Africa, emphasizing the need for greater regional mobility. Speaking at the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Investor Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, he stressed that Africa must create an enabling environment for sports growth by removing barriers to movement and fostering regional integration.

The summit, which gathered prominent stakeholders from Africa’s sports and infrastructure sectors, focused on leveraging sports as a driver of economic growth and sustainable development on the continent. Hon. Adams participated in a high-level panel alongside Rwanda’s Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire; South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie; NBA Commissioner Adam Silver; and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. The discussion highlighted opportunities for investment in sports infrastructure and strategies for industry sustainability.

Referring to Ghana’s efforts under President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Adams stated, “Africa should be able to travel freely among its nations.” He emphasized that easing movement across borders would significantly benefit sports development and economic progress.

He also underscored the importance of investing in grassroots and youth programs. “If we want to produce elite athletes, we must build a strong foundation,” he said. “Ghana has established structures like the Grassroots Sports Secretariat and the School Sports Organization to nurture young talent from an early age.”

Acknowledging that government initiatives alone are not enough, Hon. Adams called for the strengthening of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks to attract private sector investments. “A clear and well-defined PPP structure is essential so investors know the proper channels to follow,” he explained.

He concluded by emphasizing Africa’s potential as a producer of sporting talent: “Africa must be recognized as a production line for sports, not just a market for athletes. We need to create opportunities here for our athletes to develop and excel.”

The event was attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Ministers from various countries, NBA executives, and both current and former basketball stars. All participants shared a common vision of harnessing sports as a catalyst for economic and social progress across Africa.

As the continent continues to expand its sports ecosystem, leaders like Hon. Kofi Adams remain dedicated to ensuring that Africa not only participates in global sports but also becomes a significant producer of world-class athletes and sports entrepreneurs.

Ghana Aims to Transform Participation into Strategic Influence at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Hon Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon Kofi Iddie Adams delivered a compelling call to action during the press launch of Ghana House at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2026. Emphasizing the evolving landscape of international sport, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s rich history in the Games and outlined a strategic vision to leverage the event for national growth beyond medals.

In his remarks, the Minister noted that Ghana has participated in the Commonwealth Games since 1954, proudly showcasing its athletes' discipline and excellence. Over the decades, Ghana has amassed more than 60 medals, primarily in athletics and boxing, demonstrating that with proper preparation, the nation can compete effectively on the world stage.

However, he emphasized that today's global sporting environment demands more than participation. "The question now is how a country converts presence into influence, and performance into opportunity," he stated. The Minister pointed to Birmingham 2022 as a prime example of how the Commonwealth Games can serve as a platform for tourism, trade, investment, and national branding. The UK’s recent Commonwealth Games generated an estimated £1.2 billion for the economy, with significant social and media engagement, illustrating the broader benefits of strategic engagement.

Central to this vision is the establishment of Ghana House, a national showcase that will serve as a hub for culture, investment, tourism, and diplomacy during Glasgow 2026. The Minister stressed that Ghana House must reflect the country's creativity, hospitality, and entrepreneurial spirit, and act as a meeting point for business leaders, diaspora, and international partners.

Crucially, the Minister underscored that Ghana’s visibility and influence will be driven by the performance and conduct of its athletes. "When our athletes shine, Ghana shines," he declared. "Their discipline, pride, and success will serve as the most powerful ambassadors of our nation." He called for increased investment in athlete preparation, technical support, welfare, and training to ensure Ghana’s athletes are well-positioned to excel.

Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government has committed to creating an equitable sports ecosystem that fosters growth across all disciplines. The goal is to move Ghana from mere participation to a position of strategic influence, where athletic success translates into business opportunities, cultural exchange, and national visibility.

Hon. Adams concluded by urging a coordinated national effort involving government, the private sector, the media, Ghanaian businesses, and the diaspora. "Let us tell a stronger Ghana story one of talent, resilience, and ambition. Let us prepare our athletes properly, support them fully, and ensure Ghana’s presence in Glasgow is not only visible but also impactful and commercially beneficial," he stated.

As Ghana prepares for Glasgow 2026, the message is clear: the nation will strive not just to compete but to lead and leave a lasting impression on the Commonwealth stage.
