New production plant for GIHOC Distilleries inaugurated by H. E. President John Mahama. EDAIF provided credit facilities to the company totalling GHC 13.5 million for the expansion of the production plant. A new Quality Control (QC) laboratory was also constructed to meet International standards.

EDAIF MAINTAINS STRONG SUPPORT FOR GHANAIAN FARMERS

Ghana marked the 31st Edition of the National Farmers Day on 4th December 2015. For the 6th year running, EDAIF has been a major sponsor of the National Farmers’ Day. Each year, the organisation provides substantial prizes worth hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis to farmers. Recognising their contribution to national development, EDAIF provides support as a means of encouraging farmers, fishermen and women as well as many others in the agricultural sector.
Since its inception, EDAIF has been at the forefront of financing agriculture related to agro-processing. Several farmers, farmer groups and associations have benefited from the Fund in the past. These interventions have gone a long way to improve the lives of farmers and that of their families. More importantly, the support has largely contributed to national development.
The livestock, food crops and non-traditional export sectors of the economy have all seen major boost over the years as a result of EDAIF’s financial and technical support. Others include financial support for initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on capacity-building and related services. These have significantly contributed to economic growth.
This year, EDAIF provided two tractors, worth GHC 400,000. The two tractors were given to Gideon Anaaba, the National Best Livestock farmer and Augustine Boateng, first runner-up, respectively.
The theme for this year’s celebration: “Transform Ghana-Invest in Agriculture”, rightly falls within EDAIF's mandate of investing in agriculture for accelerated national development.

EDAIF CONTRIBUTES TO GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT IN GHANA
The number of unemployed graduates in Ghana is estimated at more than 200,000. This figure is likely to go up by the close of 2015. These are a grim statistics when one considers the vital contribution the nation’s graduates could make to national development. Similarly one wonders how they survive, taking care of themselves (and sometimes their families) under this condition.
The phenomenon of graduate unemployment has been attributed to several factors, notable among them is the lack of political will as well as national economic constraints that militate against the creation of jobs. The private sector has seen relatively slow growth over the years, making it impossible to complement the efforts of government. Many have also cited the disparities between the content of courses taught in our tertiary institutions and the skills demanded on today’s job market.
Perhaps the least mentioned, yet the most important reason why many graduates stay at home is their lack of initiative in creating jobs themselves. These challenges notwithstanding, graduates from our tertiary institutions have the requisite basic knowledge and ability come up with ideas that eventually could be monetized. Perhaps what needs to be added is some creativity, coupled with the willingness to move away from the “job seeking” mentality to a “job creation” one.
The Export Trade, Agricultural and Industrial Development Fund (EDAIF) has initiated a financial package towards incentivising tertiary graduates with the overall objective of contributing to reducing graduate unemployment in the country. The initiative is to nurture and groom young graduates with bankable business ideas into successful business moguls.
Dubbed the GRADUATE ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (GEDI) the package is intended to provide financial and technical resources to budding entrepreneurs with the view of creating jobs for the teeming unemployed graduates from the country’s tertiary institutions. Applicants’ business ideas must fall in line with the fund’s mandate: export trade, agriculture related to agro-processing and industrial development.

EDAIF SUPPORTS NON-TRADITIONAL EXPORTS

EDAIF has extended support to firms in the export sector to enable them introduce their products to both domestic and foreign markets.
Funds have been allocated over the years towards sending exhibitors to fairs and exhibitions. Ghanaian exporters have been supported to participate in fairs organized in the West African sub region and beyond.
In a bid to enhance and increase the export of these Ghanaian-made handicrafts to an appreciable level to rake in revenue, funds were also approved for the development of two craft villages in Aburi and Atwima-Foase in the Eastern and Ashanti Regions respectively.
Beautifully woven Ghanaian clothes, baskets, living room furniture, embroidery, jewellery, wall paintings and hangings, musical instruments, footwear and other artifacts have taken center-stage in these craft villages and continue to attract tourists from far and near.

ZORGOBU RICE FARMERS RECEIVE SUPPORT

Zoborgu is a predominantly farming community in the Tamale Metropolis. Rice is the staple food produced in the area. In a bid to improve the local production of rice in the country, deliberate efforts have been made and continues to be made by way of support to raise the capacities of local rice farmers.

One landmark intervention to the farmers of Zoborgu is the technical support and farmer education given to them by EDAIF. The use of outmoded farm practices has now become a thing of the past.

With these forms of support, rice farmers here have been able to increase crop yield from the previous 2.5 tonnes per hectare to 4 tonnes per hectare - an increase of about 46%.

EDAIF SUPPORTS VICTIMS OF JUNE 3 DISASTER AT THE KORLE-BU TEACHING HOSPITAL
As part of EDAIF’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities for 2015, the Board, Management and Staff of the Fund made a donation of GH¢ 80,000.00 to the Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Wednesday 22nd July, 2015.
The donation was in recognition of the selfless and dedicated service staff of the Unit have been rendering to patients, especially victims of the June 3 twin flood and fire disaster victims.
Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Gilbert Buckle expressed gratitude to the Board, Management and Staff of EDAIF for the donation and support towards health delivery in the country.
It would be recalled that on June 3, a devastation caused by an explosion at the Goil filling station and flood at Circle, Accra left more than 150 people dead, leaving scores of others sustaining various degrees of injury and severe burns.
