The Ebola Awareness Training is aimed at providing a general overview of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This module explores pertinent issues of tracking, identification, diagnosing and threat classification of Ebola patients as well as its potential cases within a pandemic zone.
According to WHO, between 2015 and 2016 there were 7490 suspected cases of Zika virus reported in Cape Verde and between 29 February and 6 March 2016, 33 suspected cases were registered on 2 of 9 islands, in Santiago island and Sao Filipe municipality (Fogo island).
Although the number of cases in Cape Verde is declining, a Zika virus component was specifically added to the WADPI CURRICULUM for the training of Cape Verde to enhance national capacity in Managing the virus. The aspect of the training on Zika virus was facilitated by the US Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit.

PRAIA – Cabo Verde became the 15th and final country under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commission to successfully complete training and participate in the West Africa Disaster Preparedness Initiative (WADPI) program.

WADPI DRAWS DOWN CURTAIN ON TRAINING IN CAPE VERDE
The 15th and last country to benefit from the West Africa Disaster Preparedness Initiative Training Programme organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and supported by the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) ended on Friday, 24th February on a strong note.
This brings to an end the training programme which started in July 2015. WADPI trained 46 people in Disaster Preparedness and Response Management in Praia, Cape Verde.
In total, WADPI has trained 1,418 people mainly from the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Member States including Cameroon and 30 from the ECOWAS Commission

The Health and Non-Health Basic First Responder Training module was created to strengthen participant capacity in disaster management at the first-response level. Participants are properly trained and familiarized with the fundamental concepts of personnel safety, scene assessment, triage, and injured population care at a rudimentary level.
Participants in the IT Boot Camp were taken through modern softwares used in disaster management.

The ceremony was well-attended with high level officials from the Government of Cape Verde including Honourable Arlindo da Rosaria, Minister of Health and Social Security, Mr. Xavier Crespin, Director General of West African Health Organisation, Amb. Donald L Heflin, US Ambassador to the Republic of Cape Verde; Officials from United States Africa Command, representatives from International and Civil Society Organizations as well as Subject Matter Experts from select ECOWAS Member States were in attendance.

The opening ceremony was attended by high level Government officials and International Organizations. US Ambassador to the Republic of Cape Verde, Amb. Donald L. Helfin attend the ceremony and gave an insightful remark on WADPI and US Government's support for Disaster Preparedness across West Africa and beyond. Hon. Paulo Rocha, Minister of Internal Affairs in his remark elaborated on various disasters that face his country Cape Verde.
Minister of Health and Social Security, Hon. Arlindo Da Rosario and Mr. Xaxier Crespin, Director General of West Africa Health Organization were some of the High level officials in attendance.

All is set for the Official Opening Ceremony tomorrow at exactly 9 am at Pestana Tropico in Praia, Cape Verde. Ministers of State from the host country are expected to partake in the opening ceremony.
Senior officials from ECOWAS, the US EMBASSY and some International Organizations have all confirmed their participation.
