Today, key environmental stakeholders gathered at the Miklin Hotel in East Legon, Accra, for a vital one-day stakeholder workshop focused on the Forest Policy Coherence and Public Expenditure Analysis (FoRCE Project).

​In his opening remarks, Dr. Joseph Appiah-Gyapong (Acting Director, Climate Change Unit-Forestry Commission of Ghana) hit the nail on the head: to truly tackle deforestation, illegal land activities, and climate change, we need stronger policy coordination, effective governance, and strategic public spending.

​The day was packed with insight-driven presentations from experts across global and local institutions, including Ms. Naoko Takahashi (FAO), Dr. Richard Fischer (Thünen Institute of Forestry, Germany), and Dr. Jewel Andoh (CSIR-FORIG). A big thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Obeng for smoothly steering the ship as the Master of Ceremony, and to Dr. Kwame Antwi Oduro (Director, CSIR-FORIG) for delivering the closing remarks!

​By aligning agriculture, forestry, and land-use policies, Ghana is taking major steps toward a sustainable, resilient green economy.

As part of ongoing efforts to advance environmental sustainability and responsible stewardship, Engr. Dr. Prosper Mensah, a Research Scientist at CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana, was featured in an interview by the Earth Stewards (Holy Earth) platform in the United States of America on the theme, “Turning Trash into Building Materials.”

The discussion underscored the importance of forest conservation, the sustainable use of forest and agricultural residues, biomass valorization, and active public participation in environmental stewardship. It also highlighted the critical role of tree planting, circular bioeconomy approaches, and innovative green material development in building sustainable communities and strengthening climate resilience.

Dr. Jewel Andoh, a Research Scientist at CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG), recently joined the Thünen Institute of Forestry for a two-month research stay, where he presented joint findings on forest policy coherence analysis and public expenditure for Ghana.

The study, developed in collaboration with researchers from the Thünen Institute, CSIR-FORIG, and Makerere University, seeks to align policies in Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors with public spending to combat deforestation and promote sustainable land use. Conducted under the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s ForCE project, the research highlights Ghana’s progress in forest conservation, climate change mitigation, agroforestry, and sustainable agriculture through coordinated policy efforts.

The findings also reveal opportunities to strengthen carbon market initiatives and improve financing alignment to support sustainability goals, with further evaluations and a national stakeholder workshop expected to deepen insights into implementation.

Knowledge sharing remains essential in driving research impact and sustainable development.

At today’s colloquium, Dr. William Dumenu delivered a thought-provoking presentation on “How do informal forest product-based enterprises achieve success?”

The presentation examined the operational dynamics, challenges and success factors influencing informal forest product enterprises and their contribution to economic growth and community livelihoods.

The session was chaired by Dr. Elizabeth A. Obeng, whose insightful contributions guided the engaging discussions that followed.

The colloquium reaffirmed the importance of research-driven conversations in shaping policies and practices that support sustainable forest-based enterprises and inclusive development.

At the 5th Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) International Conference, Emmanuel Sarpong contributed to important conversations on the future of research and knowledge sharing under the theme, “The Open Movement in Times of Urgency and Rapid Change.”

He presented a paper titled, “Exploring the Knowledge and Practices of Open Science among Scientists in Selected CSIR Institutes in Ghana,” where he emphasized the importance of open access publishing, open data, open methodology, and open peer review in enhancing research visibility, increasing citation rates, and strengthening collaboration among researchers.

The study also identified key gaps and barriers affecting open science adoption, while calling for greater awareness, institutional support, and collaboration to advance open science practices in Ghana and beyond.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Supports CSIR-FORIG with Tree Climbing Equipment

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, through its Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, has donated tree climbing equipment to the National Tree Seed Centre at CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana!

Receiving the equipment on behalf of CSIR-FORIG, the Director, Dr. Kwame Antwi Oduro, expressed gratitude to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew for their continued partnership and support.
