SCIENCE MUST DRIVE GHANA’S FIGHT AGAINST GALAMSEY.

Scientific evidence is raising serious concerns about the impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s soils, water, food safety and public health.

Speaking at the 2026 UESD-FES Stakeholder Conference at Peduase-Aburi, CSIR-Soil Research Institute Senior Research Scientist Mr. Sadick Adams warned that heavy metals and other mining-related contaminants could enter the food chain and pose potential health risks through prolonged exposure.

He called for continuous environmental monitoring, stronger scientific research and greater use of research findings in national policy and decision-making.

Participants at the conference stressed that tackling galamsey requires more than periodic enforcement. Ghana needs a coordinated approach combining science, effective regulation, environmental restoration, sustainable livelihoods and community participation.

Protecting our soils and water means protecting our food, our health and our future.

CSIR-SRI Strengthens Proposal Writing Skills to Enhance Research Funding Competitiveness.

The CSIR-Soil Research Institute (CSIR-SRI) has successfully organized a two-day Proposal Development Workshop to strengthen the capacity of its scientists and staff to develop competitive research proposals that can attract national and international funding.

Held from 15th–16th July 2026, the workshop also served as a platform to develop an institutional proposal for a National Soil Dashboard and Information System—an initiative aimed at improving access to reliable soil information for sustainable agriculture, climate resilience and evidence-based decision-making in Ghana.

Opening the workshop, Dr. Robert Brenya, a research scientist at CSIR-SRI, encouraged participants to transform innovative ideas and scientific discoveries into high-impact, fundable research proposals that address national development priorities.

Facilitated by Dr. Edward Yeboah, former director of CSIR-SRI and renowned soil scientist, the workshop explored proposal development, soil information management, research partnerships and strategies for securing competitive grants. Participants also examined the need for a centralized institutional soil data repository to enhance collaboration, improve data accessibility and better serve farmers, policymakers, extension officers and other stakeholders.

On the second day, the Director of CSIR-SRI, Dr. Collins Tay, described proposal writing as an indispensable skill for today's researchers, urging participants to position the Institute as a trusted partner for international collaborations through innovation, excellence and strong institutional capacity.

The workshop concluded with group presentations on the proposed soil dashboard project, reinforcing CSIR-SRI's commitment to research excellence, collaboration and innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Ghana.

Evidence-Based Fertilizer Use and Increased Research Funding Are Critical for Ghana’s Agricultural Future.

The Director of the CSIR-Soil Research Institute, Dr Collins Tay, has called for a more science-driven approach to fertiliser management and increased investment in agricultural research to safeguard Ghana’s soils and enhance national food security.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during Joy Agribusiness Month, Dr. Tay highlighted concerns over the indiscriminate use of imported fertilizers that may not be suitable for Ghana’s diverse soil conditions. He noted that blanket fertilizer recommendations, without proper soil testing and nutrient assessment, can contribute to soil degradation, nutrient imbalances, and environmental pollution.

“Some soils may already contain adequate levels of nutrients such as nitrogen or phosphorus. Applying fertilizers without considering soil conditions can result in excess nutrients leaching into the environment,” he explained.

Dr. Tay emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government, policymakers, researchers, and agricultural stakeholders to ensure that fertilizer importation and application are guided by scientific evidence and local soil data.

He also raised concerns about the inadequate funding of agricultural research in Ghana. While the government supports researchers through salary payments, research activities themselves largely depend on donor funding. This, he cautioned, poses risks to national ownership of critical agricultural data and limits the capacity of research institutions to fully deliver on their mandates.

The CSIR-Soil Research Institute continues to play a vital role in providing soil fertility information, land suitability assessments, and agricultural mapping services that support sustainable agriculture and environmental management.

Investing in research and integrating scientific expertise into agricultural policy are essential steps toward protecting Ghana’s soils, improving productivity, and ensuring long-term food security.

AWARD Fellowship Empowers Scientist to Champion Sustainable Farming and Community Development.

Congratulations to Miss Mary Koduah, a Senior Technical Officer at CSIR-Soil Research Institute (CSIR-SRI), for successfully completing the prestigious African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Mentorship Program.

The year-long fellowship equipped her with valuable skills in research, mentorship, stakeholder engagement, and gender-inclusive agricultural development. Her participation was supported by the Director of CSIR-SRI, Dr. Collins Tay, with mentorship from Dr. Robert Brenya.

As part of the fellowship's community engagement activities, Miss Koduah organized an outreach programme at Nweneso No. 1 on April 21, 2026, under the theme: "Clean Water, Healthy Soil, and Quality Food."

Through this initiative, she engaged community members on the importance of environmental sustainability, soil health, and safe agricultural practices to improve livelihoods and food security.
