AYIGYA ZONGO COMMUNITY GETS HEALTH CLINIC

A newly constructed polyclinic has been handed over to the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly in Ayigya Zongo, Kumasi, to bring essential healthcare services closer to residents and reduce the need to travel outside the community for treatment.

The facility, constructed with support from Qatar Charity, was initiated by the Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak and the Oforikrom Municipal Chief Executive.

The Polyclinic is expected to ease healthcare access challenges in the densely populated Ayigya Zongo community, where some residents previously relied on health facilities outside the area for certain services.

It has children’s, male and female wards, maternity and delivery facilities, a laboratory, pharmacy, vaccination and quarantine rooms, a medical examination room and other supporting facilities.

At the handover ceremony, the Oforikrom Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Anwel Sadat Ahmed, said the facility would improve access to healthcare in Ayigya Zongo and complement existing health facilities in the municipality.

Assembly Member for Ayigya Zongo, Mr. Issaka Ali Sambo, also noted that the facility would address some of the healthcare needs of the community by reducing the distance residents had to travel to seek medical attention.

Hon. Mubarak said he would continue to support development projects aimed at improving the lives of residents in the Ashanti Region and urged the public to support government development initiatives.

The Municipal Health Directorate for Oforikrom encouraged residents to prioritize visiting the hospital for medical attention rather than resorting to self-medication.

OFORIKROM UNDERTAKES MASS ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION EXERCISE

The Oforikrom Municipal Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Veterinary Services Directorate, has conducted a free mass anti-rabies vaccination exercise for dogs and other susceptible animals across the municipality.

The official launch of the programme, held on Monday, September 28, 2026, formed part of activities commemorating World Rabies Day under the theme “Stronger Together.”

Vaccination points were established at the Chief Palace at Boadi, Hospital at Emena, Information Centre at Deduako, Roman School at Kotei and Methodist School Park at Ayeduase.

The exercise was also extended to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where animals were vaccinated at the Vice-Chancellor’s Guest House and the senior and junior staff apartments and bungalows near the Botanical Garden entrance.

Veterinary personnel used the exercise to engage animal owners on the importance of regular anti-rabies vaccination and safe handling of domestic animals.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects mammals and can be transmitted to humans mainly through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Although the disease is preventable, it is fatal once clinical symptoms develop. Vaccination of dogs and other susceptible animals remains an important measure for reducing the risk of transmission.

Residents were advised to promptly report animal bites and scratches and seek medical attention following exposure, while the animals involved should be reported to veterinary authorities for appropriate action.

The Department of Agriculture said the activities were aimed at improving public awareness and increasing community participation in efforts to control rabies within the municipality.
The observance brought together veterinary officials, animal owners, schools and communities in support of efforts to safeguard public health and animal welfare.

ANTI-RABIES CAMPAIGN TARGETS SCHOOLS IN OFORIKROM MUNICIPALITY

The Oforikrom Municipal Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Veterinary Services Directorate, has organized a sensitization programme for pupils in selected schools within the municipality to raise awareness about rabies prevention and promote responsible pet ownership.

The programme, held as part of activities to commemorate World Rabies Day, took place on Thursday, September 24, under the theme “Stronger Together, with the campaign targeting selected schools in Boadi, Emena, Kotei-Deduako and Ayeduase.

The initiative aimed at educating the schoolchildren on the dangers of rabies, how the disease is transmitted and measures that could be adopted to prevent its spread among animals and humans. The campaign also sought to equip pupils with the knowledge needed to respond appropriately when they encounter stray or unfamiliar animals, particularly dogs, which are commonly associated with the transmission of rabies.

Officials from the Department of Agriculture and the Veterinary Services Directorate used the programme to emphasize the importance of responsible pet ownership, including ensuring that domestic animals are properly cared for and vaccinated against rabies.

Pupils were encouraged to immediately inform their parents, guardians, teachers or other responsible adults whenever they are bitten or scratched by an animal.

The collaboration between the two institutions formed part of efforts to strengthen preventive measures against rabies within the municipality. The campaign recognized that controlling rabies requires cooperation between veterinary authorities, animal owners, schools, communities and other stakeholders.

The school-based approach was intended to reach children with preventive information at an early age, particularly because children may frequently come into contact with domestic animals without fully understanding the potential risks associated with such interactions.

OFORIKROM ISD EDUCATES CITIZENS ON FREE PRIMARY HEALTHCARE

The Information Services Department (ISD) of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly has intensified public education on the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme, encouraging residents to take advantage of the initiative to access basic healthcare services without financial barriers.

The programme introduced by the government is a major health reform designed to bring health care closer to where Ghanaians live and work, with emphasis on prevention, early detection and basic treatment at the community level.

The sensitisation drive aims to ensure that residents understand how the programme works, where services can be accessed, and what is required to participate.

During the engagement, residents were taken through the various ways they could access primary healthcare services within their communities. They were encouraged to visit designated Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds, Health Centres and Polyclinics for services covered under the programme.

The residents were also educated on the importance of seeking healthcare early rather than waiting until an illness becomes serious. They were encouraged to make use of available preventive services like blood pressure and sugar checks, maternal and child health care, immunizations, family planning, nutrition counselling, treatment for common illnesses and other basic healthcare services provided under the programme.

The ISD team emphasized that Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) is not the same as Free Hospital Care, as the programme only covers services within the primary healthcare package. Where admission, surgery, or specialist treatment is required, the NHIS or Mahama Cares initiative will provide the necessary support.

Residents were therefore encouraged to renew their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration, since the FPHC programme does not replace the NHIS. In cases where a patient’s condition requires referral beyond the primary healthcare level, the NHIS remains essential for accessing further treatment at district and higher-level hospitals.

The education also highlighted the role of community members in making the programme successful. Residents were encouraged to listen to health workers, participate in community health activities and share accurate information about the programme with their families, friends and neighbours.

The ISD’s engagement is expected to help address misinformation and ensure that residents of the Oforikrom Municipality are better informed about the opportunities available to them under the Free Primary Healthcare programme.

GCB REFURBISHES ICT LABORATORY FOR KOKOBEN M/A SCHOOL

The Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) has refurbished and equipped the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory of the Appiadu-Kokoben M/A School to improve access to digital learning and enhance the quality of ICT education among pupils in the community.

The refurbished laboratory was handed over to the school on Wednesday, September 9, at a short ceremony attended by officials of GCB, the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, the Municipal Education Directorate, traditional leaders and representatives of the local community.

The project was undertaken under GCB’s Staff Community Impact Program (SCIP), an initiative through which staff of the bank collectively contribute towards projects aimed at addressing developmental challenges and improving the well-being of communities.

Mr. Patrick Bamfo Boateng, Kumasi Regional Manager of GCB, said the initiative was driven by the bank’s commitment to supporting communities in which it operated and responding to identified needs that could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

He said community development required collaboration among institutions, businesses and local stakeholders, adding that GCB staff were therefore encouraged to identify practical challenges within their communities and contribute towards addressing them.

“This initiative is about identifying challenges within our communities and finding practical ways of addressing them. As GCB staff, we believe that our responsibility goes beyond banking; we must also contribute to the development of the communities in which we live and work,” he said.

He explained that Kumasi Cluster 2, comprising the GCB branches at KNUST, Tech Junction, Ahinsan and the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE) Kumasi Cluster, selected the Appiadu-Kokoben M/A School as its beneficiary for this year’s SCIP project. The choice of the school, he said, reflected the staff’s desire to invest in an area that could have a direct and lasting impact on the education and future prospects of children in the community.

Mr. Alex Asante Asiamah, Staff Community Impact Program Coordinator, said the SCIP was designed to harness the collective efforts of GCB employees to create positive change in communities. He noted the programme provided an opportunity for staff to identify pressing community needs and pool their resources and expertise to support sustainable interventions.

The refurbishment was therefore expected to provide pupils and teachers with a more conducive environment for practical ICT lessons and help bridge gaps in access to technology at the basic school level.

The Municipal Education Director, Madam Dorothy Opare Baidu, commended GCB and its staff for selecting the school for the intervention, describing the initiative as an important contribution to improving ICT education in the municipality.

She said access to functional ICT facilities was increasingly important to the delivery of quality education, particularly as technology continued to influence teaching, learning and access to information.

Madam Baidu urged the school authorities and pupils to take proper care of the facility and ensure that it was used for its intended purpose. She also encouraged the pupils to take advantage of the improved facility to develop their computer skills and cultivate an interest in science and technology.

Mr. Enoch Quaye, Deputy Director of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, expressed appreciation to GCB for supporting the school and contributing to development within the municipality. He said partnerships between the private sector and local government institutions were essential to complement government’s efforts in providing infrastructure and other facilities required to improve education.

The traditional leaders commended the bank and its staff for responding to an identified educational need in the community and appealed to other corporate institutions to emulate the initiative by supporting development projects in underserved communities.
