Dr Joseph Garcia, Gibraltar's Deputy Chief Minister, presented an exhibit yesterday in honour of the 60th anniversary of Gibraltar's first appearance as petitioners before the United Nations.
Acting Archivist Gerry Wood organised the event planning with the aid of his Archives team and volunteers.
The exhibition features 210 images, including photographs, documents, and clippings from various newspapers and magazines. The goal of this section is to describe how the United Nations came into being in the years following World War Two and how Gibraltar became a topic for discussion within the Committee of 24. The exhibits demonstrate how the visit to the United Nations in New York on September 19, 1963, exactly sixty years ago today, was formative for the Gibraltarians as a people by demonstrating how Joshua Hassan and Peter Isola were leaders at the time.
According to Dr. Garcia, Sir Joshua Hassan and Peter Isola accomplished a significant milestone in September 1963 by giving their inaugural speeches before the United Nations Committee of 24.
Dr. Garcia thanked and expressed his sincere appreciation to the acting Archivist, Mr. Gerard Wood, and his staff for the fantastic work that they put in to make this exhibition a reality.
The exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. until the 4th October, 2023.
If you want to learn more about the exhibition, please stop by the John Mackintosh Hall to speak with one of our staff. We encourage the students from the local schools to attend to gain knowledge about Gibraltar's past history!

“The Gibraltar question cannot be solved by handing a territory over from one country to another against the wishes of a people who see themselves increasingly on the threshold of nationhood”
- The Hon Dr Joseph Garcia CMG MP [Deputy Chief Minister since 2011]
The Gibraltar National Archives cordially extends an invitation to the general public to attend our forthcoming exhibition, commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Gibraltar's membership in the United Union. The event will commence on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, at the John Mackintosh Hall.
The Exhibition showcases Gibraltar's desire for Self-Determination and free association with Britain to an international audience. There will be a total of 210 pictures in this collection, including photographs, documents, and news articles, all of which illustrate the history of the United Nations and Gibraltar's role in its establishment.
‘’This exhibition is about the collective journey of a small people seeking the recognition and the exercise of their democratic right to choose. The Government is very grateful to Acting Archivist Gerard Wood and to his team for having brought the different threads in that journey together in such a professional manner. ‘’
- The Hon Dr Joseph Garcia CMG
🔈 Have you heard about the event in Gibraltar on Sunday, July 23rd, 1923?
👮♂️ Farewell to troops and police
Yesterday morning, His Excellency the Governor and Commander-in-Chief General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, whose unexpected departure from Gibraltar was announced on Saturday afternoon, made a farewell inspection of troops quartered in the Garrisons and of the Police Force.
🌈 HAPPY PRIDE MONTH 🌈
The Gibraltar National Archives is usually associated with the past, but we aim to make it more welcoming by showcasing the history and culture of the present day. We wanted to do something special to celebrate Pride Month on the Rock and the progress that has been made over the years, so we launched this initiative. We interviewed two members of the LGBTQ+ committee, Paul Perez (a Design Technology Specialist Teacher at Bayside School) and Petros Dimitriou (a PhD student in Biology at the University of Gibraltar). Manar Ben Tahayekt (Social Media Administration) and Marcelino Linares (Digitisation & Cartography) conducted the interview. The below is an abridged and edited version of the full interview which has been archived for posterity.
We began the interview by asking, "Has there been historic progress for LGBTQ+ community in Gibraltar?"
''Historically, I think we have made great strides. The fact that we have accomplished so much as a country is remarkable. It's a little bit of a shame that we have been so slow to join the trend. Since other countries, including our Mother Land, the United Kingdom, had their legislation changed long before we did, we've been playing catch-up while we waited to see how the revised UK legislation was received. That's what I think happened, anyway; nevertheless, we're attempting to play catch-up and become more open-minded, so bear with us. In my opinion, we should always try to be as inclusive as possible, which is a good response to this type of question.’’
Aaron Mills and Adrian Charles Triay-Dignam became Gibraltar's first openly gay couple to wed on December 17, 2016, and the event was covered by the Chronicle and broadcast on GBC Television. Since then, many LGBTQ+ couples have travelled to Gibraltar to get married here because it is considered safer than other nations.
In addition, we discussed the legal protections made in favour of members of the LGBTQ+ community in Gibraltar, saying, "So that is straightforward; I have a bit of a list here. We were fortunate enough to get the same s*x decriminalisation act in 1993, which was first encouraged by the GGR (Gibraltar Gay Rights Association). They were the ones who really convinced the Gibraltar Government. Through the Equal Opportunities Act of 2006, they were able to put an end to the discrimination towards employees including LGBTQ+ individuals. In 2007, the Equal Rights Association took the initiative to lead a political campaign, which resulted in the participation of the EU and the UK Foreign Affairs Committee in an effort to help reform discriminatory practises.’’
In previous years, there have been events that developed around the theme of Pride, but they have been given alternative names. For example, I know that a few years ago there was Equalities day, which wasn't fully supported by the LGBTQ+ community. In June of last year, the Gibraltar LGBTQ+ Committee held its first official pride month.
We, wrapped up the interview, by stating that we believe that the LGBTQ+ community are searching for a sense of belonging and acceptance nowadays. We appreciate your taking part in this interview with us.
