These images were taken shortly after the young peregrines had fledged, when they paused on the ledge to rest and orient themselves after their first flights. Their juvenile plumage and fresh flight feathers were still clearly visible as the evening light caught them.

Every spring, the skies over Gibraltar come alive with the fast flight and unmistakable screeching calls of the Pallid Swift. For many of us, hearing them overhead is one of the true signs that spring has arrived.
These amazing birds spend the winter far south in Africa, especially across the Sahel and tropical regions, where the weather is warmer and insects are plentiful. As temperatures rise in spring, they make the long journey north across the Mediterranean to breed in southern Europe, including here in Gibraltar.
Pallid swifts are perfectly at home around our Rock, nesting on cliffs and old buildings especially around the old town. They spend most of their lives in the air, feeding, flying, and even sleeping while airborne. Their high-pitched screams echo through the streets and around the cliffs from March onwards, bringing a real feeling of life and warmer days ahead.
By late summer and autumn, they begin their long migration south again, leaving Gibraltar behind until the following spring. Their return each year is a reminder of the changing seasons and the incredible journeys taking place above our heads.

Each spring, our skies above Gibraltar’s nature reserve become a battleground of instinct, survival, and spectacle.
The mighty Griffon Vulture arrive on their seasonal journey, soaring on the warm thermals as they pass over the Rock. But their passage is not always peaceful.
Unfriendly gulls harass them from below, diving and mobbing in noisy defiance, while above and around them our resident Peregrine Falcon fiercely defend their breeding territory. Fast, fearless, and highly territorial, the falcons tolerate no intruders near their nesting sites, even giant vultures many times their size.
Yet the Griffon Vultures continue on with remarkable grace and calm, gliding across the skies in one of nature’s most dramatic aerial displays. Their arrival is always a reminder of how alive and wild Gibraltar’s skies truly are.
