Workshop on Integrated Risk Management for Natural Hazard with participation from Avannata Municipality. From 8-12 September, 2025, Avannaata Municipality participated in a workshop on “Integrated Risk Management” of natural hazards, such as rock avalanches, rock slides and landslides. The workshop was held in collaboration between the Ministry of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality, and the Swiss Polar Institute.
The core idea of the workshop was to gain insight into the handling of complex slide-events in the Swiss Alps, and to explore whether some of the lessons learnt can strengthen the management of potential future events in Greenland. Lectures and exercises were provided by Cornelia Brönnimann from the Natural Hazard Division of the Canton of Bern and prof. Markus Stoffel from the University of Geneva. Parts of the material were based on tsunami run-up maps prepared by the Ministry of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality. The participants consisted of urban planners and an environmental officer from Avannaata Municipality.
Integrated risk management of natural hazards concerns development of stakeholder cooperation on risk and jointly reducing it. The workshop started with in-door training and desk-based exercises in Ilulissat and continued with hands-on exercises on natural hazards in the field in the Uummannaq fjord region. Avannaata Municipality expressed a wish for continued cooperation on natural hazards in the future.
This workshop was arranged in collaboration between the Swiss Polar Institute and the Ministry of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality. The workshop was planned, supported and paid within the framework of the Konrad Steffen grant under the Swiss Polar Institute.

The Department of Geology in the Ministry of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality has carried out a drilling program on the Nipisat Peninsula on southwestern Disko Island during August and September. The drilling program aims to investigate the structure of the lavas in connection with Naalakkersuisut's strategy for investigating the CO2 storage potential in Greenland. Two holes are drilled, from which cores are preserved to be examined in more detail. The cores will be tested for geochemistry and used to describe the geological stratigraphi. After drilling, the holes are logged with geophysical instruments and pressure tested to examine the geotechnical properties of the rock. Before the holes have been closed, a temperature sensor has been installed in one hole to monitor the temperature development throughout the depth of the hole. Data from this sensor will be made available to anyone who could use it, for example research into permafrost or other geothermal potentials.
The entire drilling program and the associated tests are financed through the EU's Green Growth Fund, where 43.4 million DKK has been allocated over 3 years to investigate the potential for storing CO2 in the Greenlandic subsurface. Further activities in the area can therefore be expected in the coming years, if the geotechnical and geochemical investigations prove suitable for further testing.
The drilling program has been carried out by the company KSMS ApS. The company has extensive experience from similar drilling in lavas at the Faroe Islands, however with the aim of exploiting geothermal heat. The company has used local service partners from Qasigiannguit and Qeqertarsuaq, but especially from the settlement of Kangerluk, which is located 15 minutes by boat from the area where the drilling was carried out. Both the local people and the company have had great success with the cooperation and are willing to resume future cooperation if this becomes relevant.
