Strengthening the Onion Value Chain in CRR North!

A successful 3-day intensive training on the onion value chain was conducted by DGS Foundation (The Netherlands) in collaboration with Kairoh Garden Foundation (The Gambia), under the leadership of De Groot en Slot, world-renowned onion seed experts.

The training brought together participants from Niani District, CRR North, equipping them with practical skills in harvesting, curing, sorting, grading, and packaging of onions to improve quality and market value.

Farmers also gained hands-on knowledge on post-harvest handling techniques to reduce losses, enhance shelf life, and increase profitability along the value chain.

The presence of agricultural extension agents and committed farmers created a vibrant learning platform for experience sharing and adoption of improved practices.

This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the onion value chain and improving livelihoods in the region.

Hewal Marketing Federation successfully conducted a **Tomato Processing Training** on 17th March 2026, bringing together **9 women garden farmers** from different communities.

The training, facilitated by **Sorie K. Darboe**, focused on **tomato value addition, processing techniques, and preservation methods** to improve product quality and shelf life. Participants also practiced proper **hygiene and safe food handling**, ensuring high standards in processing.

Special guest **Sana Jaina (ROOT Project, Kuntaur Agriculture Office)** emphasized the importance of value addition in boosting farmers’ income, while the Federation President, **Aji Yama Njie**, appreciated the initiative and its impact on strengthening the group’s capacity.

The Federation calls on partners and stakeholders to support with necessary equipment and materials to enhance productivity and marketability.

UPDATE: CROP-H PROJECT B2B MINI TRADE FAIR

Kunting Garden and Jahaur Mandinka Garden Cooperatives have been officially invited and are currently on the ground participating in the CROP-H Project B2B Mini Trade Fair as beneficiaries of the cooperative input grant.
Their participation forms part of the USDA Mission Visit, where they are actively showcasing their produce, engaging with stakeholders, and highlighting the positive impact of the project support.

SPOTLIGHT ON AGRICULTURE

Chief Ali Touray, District Chief of Lower Saloum, is leading by example in promoting agriculture and food self-sufficiency. Today, he planted 4,000 Guwana pepper seedlings using a drip irrigation system to enhance production and productivity.
