National Assembly ratifies two international treaties, considers the NEMA bill 2026 and Second Reading of the National Assembly Powers and Privileges Bill 2026.

During the sitting of Monday the Assembly passed the second reading of the National Assembly powers and privileges Bill, 2026 laid by the Majority Leader and Member for Kantora, Hon. Billay G. Tunkara.

It establishes a modern framework for the orderly conduct of the parliamentary business and the protection of parliamentary proceedings.

Following the Second Reading of the National Assembly Powers and Privileges Bill the Assembly ratified the Rome Convention for the protection of performers, producers of phonograms, and Broadcasting Organizations, and the World Intellectual property Organisation {WIPO} performance and phonograms Treaty {WPPT} of 1996 laid by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Dawda A. Jallow.

National Assembly, NaNA Hold Advocacy Engagement with Nutrition Champions

The Office of the Clerk in collaboration with the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) and support from UNICEF-The Gambia has held a three-day advocacy engagement with National Assembly Nutrition Champions aimed at strengthening parliamentary support for nutrition policies and programmes in The Gambia.

The engagement brought together National Assembly Members serving as Nutrition Champions to deepen their understanding of nutrition-related interventions and equip them to advocate more effectively for nutrition financing and policy reforms.

During the engagement, presentations were made by officials from NaNA and UNICEF, covering topics including food fortification, bio-fortification, the triple burden of malnutrition, and the role of parliamentarians in advancing the national nutrition agenda.

The presentations highlighted the challenges The Gambia continues to face in addressing malnutrition, including underweight, overweight, and micronutrient deficiencies, as well as the rising burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

The engagement also explored strategies for strengthening domestic financing for nutrition programmes, which remain heavily dependent on support from development partners and donors.

The National Assembly Nutrition Champions pledged to use their platform to advocate for increased investment in nutrition and to support policies that improve the nutritional status of communities across The Gambia.
