The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), in collaboration with the European Union, Spanish National Police and German Federal Police, has commenced an advanced training programme on Document Security and Fraud Detection under the Common Operational Partnership (COP II) Project.
Held at the GID Training School in Tanji, the training brings together selected GID officers from various border posts, seaports, and the airport to strengthen their technical capacity to identify fraudulent, forged and manipulated travel and identity documents.
Representatives of COP II, the European Union, Spain, and Germany highlighted the importance of sustained international cooperation in strengthening The Gambiaโs capacity to address irregular migration, migrant smuggling, trafficking in persons and other forms of cross-border related crime.
They emphasised that document examination is not merely a technical border-control function, but an important tool for protecting people, disrupting criminal networks and ensuring that legitimate travellers can move safely and securely. Participants were encouraged to share the knowledge acquired with colleagues upon returning to their respective duty posts.
Representing the Ministry of Interior, Deputy Permanent Secretary Technical Lamin Jatta, described the training as a significant milestone in strengthening and modernising the countryโs internal security institutions.
He further stressed that document security is no longer a routine administrative function, but a critical first line of defence for national sovereignty and public safety, particularly as criminal networks increasingly exploit technology to produce fraudulent identity and travel documents.
The Deputy Director General, Hulay Jallow Cham, emphasised that the training comes at a critical time as the Gambia Immigration Department strengthens its capacity in border management, migration control, identity management and document security.
She noted that the ability to authenticate travel documents, detect sophisticated forgeries, and establish the true identity of travellers is essential to national security and effective border protection
On behalf of the GID, the Deputy Director General commended the European Union, the German police, and the Spanish government for their continued support in migration management. She noted that sustained international cooperation is essential to strengthening institutional capacity and addressing emerging migration and border-security challenges.
