Supporting the Family of Omar Badjie

It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic loss of Omar Badjie, a young man from Kombo Mandinaring who died under circumstances that remain unclear following an encounter with police.

During this incredibly difficult time, Omar’s family faces not only the overwhelming grief of losing a loved one, but also significant financial hardship. Family members have had to take time away from work to grieve and handle arrangements, creating additional strain during an already devastating period.

As is customary in our community, the family’s home has become a gathering place for mourners offering their condolences and support. While this provides comfort during their time of loss, it also brings considerable expenses for hospitality and arrangements.

We are asking for your compassionate support to help Omar’s family through this crisis.

Your contribution, no matter the amount, will help cover:
• Essential household expenses while family members are unable to work
• Costs associated with hosting community members during the mourning period
• Other immediate needs during this difficult transition

How to Contribute

You can send donations through any of the following electronic payment methods:
• SendWave number 2670000- Kassamanding Jawara
• Yonna Wallet 2670000- Isatou Touray

Every contribution makes a difference and demonstrates the strength of our community when we come together to support one another in times of need.

Thank you for your generosity and for keeping Omar’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.

Police Brutality in The Gambia.

A call for action to end it.

As Gambians, we stand at a critical juncture. The recent surge in police brutality demands our collective attention and action. It’s time to put aside our differences political, tribal, and personal and unite against this injustice. We must recognize that police brutality affects us all, regardless of our backgrounds. The safety and dignity of every citizen are at stake.

The Time for Action is Now

We cannot afford to wait until it happens to our family members or loved ones. The time for action is now. We must watch each others backs and demand that our authorities not only speak out against police brutality but take concrete actions to stop it. Our country needs us, and we need our country. Lets work together to create a society where every citizen feels safe and protected.

A Global and Historical Perspective

The world is watching, and history is taking note. We are not alone in this struggle. Communities around the globe have faced similar challenges and have come out stronger through collective action. Lets draw inspiration from these movements and work towards a future where our security forces protect and serve with dignity.

The Role of Youths

The youth are often at the forefront of change. Its crucial that they should be empowered to be part of the solution. Rather than being forced to the edge, they should be encouraged to participate in shaping a just society. Their energy and creativity can be harnessed to promote awareness and advocate for reform.

Training for a Better Future

Our security officers play a vital role in maintaining law and order. However, the recent incidents highlight the need for proper training. Techniques in de escalation and the appropriate use of force should be prioritized. By investing in our officers, we can ensure that they serve our communities with professionalism and respect.

A Collective Responsibility

Lets come together as Gambians to demand change. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to create a society where everyone can live without fear of brutality. Enough is enough. It’s time for us to act, to stand united, and to ensure that our authorities prioritize the safety and dignity of all citizens.

What Can we Do as citizens?

1. Stay Informed Keep ourselves updated on incidents of police brutality and efforts towards reform.
2. Raise our Voice Speak out against injustice and support initiatives that promote police accountability.
3. Support Reform Advocate for policies and training that prioritize de-escalation and proper use of force.
4. Engage in Dialogue ,Participate in discussions and forums that focus on police community relations.

Together, we can build a brighter future for The Gambia. Let’s take the first step today tomorrow may be too late.

Lets get involved

At Least Six Youth Still Detained at Yundum Police Station

Team Gom Sa Bopa, together with Lawyer Assan Martin, today visited youths detained following the civil unrest at Lamin Mandinary NTC. The unrest was sparked by the alleged killing of Omar Badjie by officers of the Gambia Police Force.

During our visit on 27th September 2025, we confirmed that at least six young men remain in detention at Yundum Police Station. They are:
1. Alieu Bah
2. Basiru Fatty
3. Amadou Dem
4. Momodou Jang Jallow
5. Musa Manneh
6. Langtong Jarju

We call for their unconditional release in line with the authorities’ own pronouncement that all detained youths would be freed.

At the same time, we reiterate our demand that the killers of Omar Badjie — and all other victims of police brutality — must be held accountable and brought to justice.

The Gambia Police Force Must Investigate and Prosecute Omar Badjie’s Killers.

The tragic death of Omar Badjie while in the custody of Gambia Police Force officers on 26th September 2025 is yet another painful reminder that our country is sliding into lawlessness at the hands of those sworn to uphold law and order.

What makes this tragedy worse is the apparent lack of seriousness and the blatant attempt to cover it up. The Police claimed that “one of the suspects fell during hot pursuit and was taken to the hospital and confirmed dead.” However, multiple eyewitness accounts contradict this version of events, stating clearly that Omar was beaten after his arrest.

The Police are not Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Their duty is to arrest suspects using reasonable force and to ensure justice through the courts — not to take lives.

History has shown us that police brutality and unlawful killings in The Gambia are often met with impunity. Yet, Gambian youths remain determined to resist any return to dictatorship and the weaponisation of our Police Force.

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) exposed a pattern of such abuses and cover-ups. The Commission revealed how senior officers, including Gorgui Mboob and Inspector Darboe, conspired to conceal the truth about the killings of 15 people — including students and infants — during the April 2000 protests. Police Officers gave false testimonies, destroyed evidence, and fabricated documents to mislead the Commission.

The TRRC also revealed police complicity in covering up the 2005 massacre of over 50 West African migrants, with falsified reports and missing station diary entries obstructing investigations.

More recently, in 2019, the death of Ousman Darboe after an encounter with the Police sparked mass protests from Serrekunda to Bijilo. Once again, the authorities promised accountability and a post-mortem, but nothing concrete has followed. Instead, the Police claimed Ousman Darboe died of asthma — a claim his relatives strongly refuted.

Many other lives have been taken by the hands of Police Officers sworn to serve and protect them, including Kebba Secka, Faraba Banta protestors and many others.

Team Gom Sa Bopa- Believe In Yourself Today, we see the same pattern repeating with the death of Omar Badjie.

Team Gom Sa Bopa, therefore, calls on the Office of National Security, the Gambia Police Force, and the National Human Rights Commission to immediately investigate not only the killing of Omar Badjie but all cases of police killings under this administration — and to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted without delay.

Enough is enough. Officers sworn to serve and protect must never be allowed to turn their guns, batons, and authority against the very people they are meant to protect. We will continue to resist police brutality within the limits of the law, and we demand justice for Omar Badjie and all victims of state violence.

Team Gom Sa Bopa Condemns Resurgence of Police Brutality, Urges NHRC and Police to Act

23rd September 2025

To the National Human Rights Commission and the Gambia Police Force

Last week witnessed a deeply troubling resurgence of police brutality, widely reported by multiple media outlets. This included violence against peaceful demonstrators at the National Audit Office (NAO), the arrest of a journalist and rights advocates, and a shocking home invasion targeting a prominent Gambian journalist, Kadija Bokum, of the State Broadcaster in Jabang.

On Monday, 15th September 2025, Gambian police officers unceremoniously disrupted the Auditor General’s (AG) press conference and forcefully removed him from his office, sparking public outrage. This action reflects President Adama Barrow’s disregard for independent institutions, his unconstitutional directives, and the police’s blind compliance — a stark reminder of democratic backsliding and a betrayal of the transitional justice promise of “Never Again.”

In response, concerned citizens gathered at the NAO to express alarm over what they described as a constitutional coup by the Head of State, who continues to defy provisions requiring the lawful removal and replacement of the AG. As activists attempted to hold a peaceful press conference outside the NAO, police launched a violent crackdown — arresting advocates, forcefully throwing activist Alieu Bah into a police pick up, assaulting journalists, and indiscriminately firing teargas into the crowd.

The violence escalated on Thursday, 18th September, when police intervened in a land dispute in Jabang. Officers from the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) and the Anti-Crime Unit were filmed slapping and manhandling detainees who were already in custody and posed no resistance.

Even more disturbing were the reported home invasions in neighborhoods far removed from the dispute. According to Ms. Bokum and multiple others, officers stormed her home, deployed teargas, beat family members, stole money, and only released her and her relative after one officer recognized her. Shockingly, the very next day, PIU officers returned to her residence, allegedly demanding the deletion of video evidence. Footage of her live broadcast was abruptly cut off when officers were seen knocking her phone from her hand.

These incidents in Jabang highlight the gravity of unchecked police misconduct and capped a week of unprecedented brutality.

We therefore call on the National Human Rights Commission and the Gambia Police Force (NHRC) to urgently investigate these violations, hold perpetrators accountable, and restore public trust in law enforcement. Failure to act will entrench the country’s democratic backsliding.

We further urge all victims of police brutality to file formal complaints with the NHRC and the Police Headquarters Human Rights/Internal Disciplinary Unit.
