Over 10,000 support measures delivered. Thousands trained. Communites empowered.
Since its opening in 2022, the Gambian-German Centre, supported by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) 🇩🇪, has achieved impressive results in promoting employment, skills development, psychosocial support and entrepreneurship for migrants, returnees, and local communities across The Gambia 🇬🇲.
✅ Support measures delivered: 10,100
✅ Training opportunities provided: 1,500
✅ Counselling sessions conducted: 2,000
Behind every number is a person supported on their path toward employment, entrepreneurship, and greater stability. The program has made a visible impact on the Gambian employment sector and helped create opportunities for communities across the country.
As this chapter comes to a close, we are proud of what has been achieved together — and even more grateful to the many partners who made it possible. ✨
A heartfelt thank you to our implementing partners for their dedication, collaboration, and unwavering commitment throughout the project:

Contact lenses — a 500-year-old idea? 👁️
Not quite 😅 — but the concept goes back further than you might think.
In 1508, Leonardo da Vinci sketched the first idea of altering vision by bringing the eye into direct contact with water. While he didn’t invent contact lenses, his drawings laid the conceptual groundwork.
It was German scientist Dr Adolf Fick who developed the first contact lenses in 1888 — made from blown glass 🇩🇪. However, they had major drawbacks: they were heavy, thick, covered the entire eye, and restricted oxygen supply. These early versions became known as “hard lenses.”
Dr Fick first tested them on rabbits, then on himself, and finally on volunteers.
Since then, contact lenses have evolved significantly and are now made from advanced, breathable materials used worldwide.
Which German innovation has surprised you the most? Let us know! 👇
