To Allah we all belong and to him we shall all return.

On behalf of the regional scout commissioner for Kanifing Municipality, Ebrima B.H. Susso, KM Scout Media Platform regret to announced the death of our dear brother and fellow scout, Siaka Sanyng.

Siaka who was untill his death, the regional scout commissioner for West Coast Region, passed away Wednesday Morning in Brikama and laid to rest on the same day.

He is described by many as a nation builder and true patriot who cares for every living being. The scouting fraternity, according to those who knew him has irreplaceably lost one of its strong men.

A three days of Regional mourning has been declared in Kanifing Municipality to pay tribute to him commencing today. May Allah grant him Janatul Firdawse and give the scouts and his family fortitude to bear his lost. May his deserted soul rest in perfect peace. Ameen!!

Derna: Boy scouts step
in to help run city after
Isis is driven out of
Libyan stronghold
The city is re-establishing normal
life after Isis – and scouts are
picking up the slack
By ADAM WITHNALL
Thursday 25 June 2015
Returning to life as normal after
months under the rule of Isis
militants can seem an impossible
task – but help is at hand from
an unlikely source in the Libyan
city of Derna.
A stronghold for the so-called
“Islamic State” in the northeast of
the country since October last
year, Derna’s residents overthrew
the militants around two weeks
ago with the help of a rival
militia group, the Abu Sleem
Martyrs Brigade.
With the fall of Isis in the city
has come the resurgence of its
boy scout movement, complete
with imported beige uniforms and
Robert Baden-Powell’s motto: “Be
prepared”.
The scoutmovement came to
Libya in the 1950s, and survived
where other reminders of colonial
rule faltered – largely because
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was
himself a member in his youth.
Speaking to The Times , a scout
chief who preferred to remain
unidentified said that since Isis
left the scouts have taken on
some of the most daunting clean-
up tasks, including clearing out
the squares used for public
executions.
“Isis raided our headquarters
eight months ago, took over the
building and threatened us if we
did our activities,” he said.
“For eight months we didn’t dare
do anything but since the
uprising started, the young scouts
came back and we are helping to
run the city.”

The original Scout law appeared
with the publication of Scouting
for Boys in 1908 and is as follows
(sic, capitalization, numbering,
etc. by Baden-Powell): [5][6][7]
1. A SCOUT'S HONOUR IS TO BE
TRUSTED . If a scout says "On
my honour it is so," that
means it is so, just as if he
had taken a most solemn
oath. Similarly, if a scout
officer says to a scout, "I trust
you on your honour to do
this," the Scout is bound to
carry out the order to the very
best of his ability, and to let
nothing interfere with his
doing so. If a scout were to
break his honour by telling a
lie, or by not carrying out an
order exactly when trusted on
his honour to do so, he would
cease to be a scout, and must
hand over his scout badge
and never be allowed to wear
it again.
2. A SCOUT IS LOYAL to the
King, and to his officers, and
to his country, and to his
employers. He must stick to
them through thick and thin
against anyone who is their
enemy, or who even talks
badly of them.
3. A SCOUT'S DUTY IS TO BE
USEFUL AND TO HELP
OTHERS. And he is to do his
duty before anything else,
even though he gives up his
own pleasure, or comfort, or
safety to do it. When in
difficulty to know which of two
things to do, he must ask
himself, "Which is my duty?"
that is, "Which is best for
other people?"---and do that
one. He must Be Prepared at
any time to save life, or to
help injured persons. And he
must do a good turn to
somebody every day.
4. A SCOUT IS A FRIEND TO ALL,
AND A BROTHER TO EVERY
OTHER SCOUT, NO MATTER
TO WHAT SOCIAL CLASS THE
OTHER BELONGS. If a scout
meets another scout, even
though a stranger to him, he
must speak to him, and help
him in any way that he can,
either to carry out the duty he
is then doing, or by giving him
food, or, as far as possible,
anything that he may be in
want of. A scout must never
be a SNOB. A snob is one who
looks down upon another
because he is poorer, or who
is poor and resents another
because he is rich. A scout
accepts the other man as he
finds him, and makes the best
of him -- "Kim," the boy scout,
was called by the Indians
"Little friend of all the world,"
and that is the name which
every scout should earn for
himself.
5. A SCOUT IS COURTEOUS: That
is, he is polite to all—but
especially to women and
children and old people and
invalids, cripples, etc. And he
must not take any reward for
being helpful or courteous.
6. A SCOUT IS A FRIEND TO
ANIMALS. He should save
them as far as possible from
pain, and should not kill any
animal unnecessarily, even if
it is only a fly---for it is one of
God's creatures.
7. A SCOUT OBEYS ORDERS of
his patrol-leader, or scout
master without question. Even
if he gets an order he does
not like, he must do as
soldiers and sailors do, he
must carry it out all the same
because it is his duty; and
after he has done it he can
come and state any reasons
against it: but he must carry
out the order at once. That is
discipline.
8. A SCOUT SMILES AND
WHISTLES under all
circumstances. When he gets
an order he should obey it
cheerily and readily, not in a
slow, hang-dog sort of way.
Scouts never grouse at
hardships, nor whine at each
other, nor swear when put
out. When you just miss a
train, or some one treads on
your favourite corn---not that
a scout ought to have such
things as corns--- or under
any annoying circumstances,
you should force yourself to
smile at once, and then
whistle a tune, and you will
be all right. A scout goes
about with a smile on and
whistling. It cheers him and
cheers other people,
especially in time of danger,
for he keeps it up then all the
same. The punishment for
swearing or bad language is
for each offence a mug of cold
water to be poured down the
offender's sleeve by the other
scouts.
9. A SCOUT IS THRIFTY, that is,
he saves every penny he can,
and puts it in the bank, so
that he may have money to
keep himself when out of
work, and thus not make
himself a burden to others; or
that he may have money to
give away to others when they
need it.
These were written for the Scouts
in the whole world, yet of course
firstly focused on Scouting in the
United Kingdom. As other groups
started up Scouting organizations
(often in other countries), each
modified the laws, for instance
'loyal to the King' would be
replaced by the equivalent text
appropriate for each country.
During the years, Baden-Powell
himself edited the text numerous
times, notably in 1911 adding:
A SCOUT IS CLEAN IN
THOUGHT, WORD AND DEED .
Decent Scouts look down upon
silly youths who talk dirt, and they
do not let themselves give way to
temptation, either to talk it or to
do anything dirty. A Scout is pure,
and clean-minded, and manly.
A version of the Guide law, hand-
written by Baden-Powell is
displayed ,and why some of us in
this world do not do things as the
scout
law say?

The Scout Motto is: BE
PREPARED which means
you are always in a
state of readiness in
mind and body to do
your DUTY.
Be Prepared in Mind
by having disciplined
yourself to be obedient
to every order, and also
by having thought out
beforehand any accident
or situation that might
occur, so that you know
the right thing to do at
the right moment, and
are willing to do it.
Be Prepared in Body
by making yourself
strong and active and
able to do the right
thing at the right
moment, and do it.

Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder
of Scouting and World Chief Scout,
died in Kenya on 8 January 1941 at
the age of 83. Soldiers and Scouts
escorted the coffin to a simple grave
at Nyeri, within sight of Mount
Kenya.
This message to all Scouts was found
among his papers after he died.
Dear Scouts,
If you have ever seen the play Peter
Pan you will remember how the
pirate chief was always making his
dying speech because he was afraid
that possibly when the time came
for him to die he might not have
time to get it off his chest. It is
much the same with me, and so,
although I am not at this moment
dying, I shall be doing so one of
these days and I want to send you a
parting word of goodbye.
Remember, it is the last you will
ever hear from me, so think it over.
I have had a most happy life and I
want each one of you to have as
happy a life too.
I believe that God put us in this
jolly world to be happy and enjoy
life. Happiness doesn’t come from
being rich, nor merely from being
successful in your career, nor by self-
indulgence. One step towards
happiness is to make yourself
healthy and strong while you are a
boy, so that you can be useful and
so can enjoy life when you are a
man.
Nature study will show you how full
of beautiful and wonderful things
God has made the world for you to
enjoy. Be contented with what you
have got and make the best of it.
Look on the bright side of things
instead of the gloomy one.
But the real way to get happiness is
by giving out happiness to other
people. Try and leave this world a
little better than you found it and
when your turn comes to die, you
can die happy in feeling that at any
rate you have not wasted your time
but have done your best. ‘Be
Prepared’ in this way, to live happy
and to die happy – stick to your
Scout promise always – even after
you have ceased to be a boy – and
God help you to do it.

Remembering John F. Kennedy, the first president to have been a Boy Scout at the age of 12.

In year was 1929, and Kennedy was a new member of Troop 2 in Bronxville, N.Y. Now that he had reached Scout age, Kennedy reasoned, it was time for his allowance to match his new Boy Scout-level maturity.

Kennedy’s remarks to Scouts and Explorers in 1961 during a White House visit. He shared how Scouts “learn the qualities of perseverance … you come to understand something about nature and something about our country.”

“After years of observation,” he continued, “I really believe that the experience you have … is the best possible training you can have to equip you for later life.”

“What you are doing now will prepare you to play a significant and responsible role in maintaining the freedom of the United States.”

Today is his birthday.

Cham Joof is termed the "doyen of scouting in
the Gambia". He grew up from the Wolf Cub
Scout and served the movement from 1938 to
2005 when he retired as the President of the
Gambia National Scout Council. Cham Joof
wrote extensively about the history of
Scouting in the Gambia. [1] In 1943 he was
appointed leader of the Gambian Contingent
of Boys Scout travelling to Mali. [3] From 1946
to 1952, Cham Joof was appointed Assistant
Scout Master. He was the founder and first
Group Scout Master of 5th Bathurst (now
Banjul ). [3] In the late 1940s, Cham Joof
represented the Gambia’s Scout movement
and delivered a speech in front of King
George VI in London. Cham Joof was the first
Gambian Scout to be awarded the Wood
Badge by the Chief Scout, which was held in
1954 at the International Scout Leader
training centre at Gilwell Park in England. It
was during his scouting days that he was
appointed by the Gambia Scouts Council to
represent the youth at the Coronation
ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953.
[1][3] In 1957, Cham Joof was selected as the
Leader of the Gambia Contingent at the World
Scout Jamboree which was held at Sutton
Coldfield in Birmingham ( England). [1] From
growing up as a Wolf Cub Scout to becoming
a Scout Master, Commissioner in Charge of
Training and President of the Gambia Scout
Council, Cham Joof gave a rare interview with
Foroyaa Panorama in which he stated:
"Scouting, which is a supplementary to
education, was dear in my heart and I
served the movement from 1938 up to
date." [1]
