The establishment of the Poliso magazine was borne out of a desire by people within and outside the Gambia, to have a platform for interaction with their National Police. Since it's inception the public has positively responded well, thus further giving a new facelift to the principles of Community Policing and Democratic Policing. It has served as a forum for critical interaction, the expression of free public views and working towards addressing the security needs of the people of the Gambia as mandated by the constitution of our dear country, through positive feedbacks derived from the public opinion.

POLICE SECURE CONVICTIONS FOR ASSAULT, PROPERTY DAMAGE AND CRIMINAL TRESPASS

The Basse Prosecution Unit has secured the convictions of Saikou Sidibeh and Musa Touray for assault causing actual bodily harm, wilful damage to property and criminal trespass before Magistrate I. Dibba at the Basse Magistrates’ Court.

The two pleaded not guilty when arraigned on July 10, 2026. Following a trial in which Inspector Gomez led the prosecution, presented witnesses and tendered evidence, the court found both guilty on all three counts on October 13, 2026.

At sentencing on October 21, 2026, the court imposed fines of D50,000 for assault causing actual bodily harm, with two years’ imprisonment in default; D25,000 for wilful damage to property, with one year’s imprisonment in default; and D25,000 for criminal trespass, with one year’s imprisonment in default.

The court also ordered the convicts to jointly pay D52,000 in compensation for damage to the complainant’s fence and D25,000 for injuries sustained by the victim. A further six months’ imprisonment was prescribed in default of payment of compensation, with the sentences ordered to run consecutively.

IGP TOURAY ATTENDS UN CONFERENCE ON TRANSNATIONAL ORGANISED CRIME IN VIENNA

Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray is attending the 13th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime in Vienna, Austria, as part of The Gambia’s delegation led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Mr Amadou Nyang.

IGP Touray is accompanied by Assistant Inspector General of Police for Service Support Kalilu Njie. The Gambian delegation also includes the Director General of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia and the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.

The conference, taking place from October 19 to 23, 2026, brings participating countries together to strengthen cooperation against transnational organised crime.

Addressing the conference on behalf of The Gambia, Mr Nyang reaffirmed the country’s commitment to coordinated action against human trafficking, illicit drug trafficking and the trafficking of small arms and light weapons. He highlighted the importance of law enforcement cooperation, intelligence-sharing and institutional coordination, with respect for the rule of law and human rights.

The Permanent Secretary also called for support for nationally owned priorities, including specialised training, modern investigative technologies and stronger forensic and intelligence capabilities.

IGP Touray’s participation forms part of the GPF’s engagement with international partners to strengthen police cooperation and the collective response to crimes that cross national borders.

GPF RECEIVES TEN PICKUPS FROM GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT POLICE OPERATIONS

The Gambia Police Force received ten pickups from The Gambia Government at Police Headquarters in Banjul on Thursday, October 22, 2026, to strengthen the operational capacity of the Police.

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray, Deputy Inspector General of Police Alhaji Demba Sowe was accompanied by Assistant Inspectors General of Police Ebrima Bah, responsible for Administration; Adeline Bassangeh, responsible for Tactical Support; and Amie Nyassi, responsible for Crime Management. The Motor Transport Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Dawda Kandeh, was also present.

The vehicles will support PIU operations by improving mobility for patrols, deployments and responses to incidents. Their provision forms part of the Government’s support to strengthen police logistics and the Force’s capacity to prevent and combat crime.

POLICE SECURE CONVICTION IN THE CASE OF BABY STEALING

The Gambia Police Force has secured the conviction of Fatoumata Jawo for stealing a baby girl from Faji K***a Health Centre.

Jawo pleaded guilty before Magistrate Bittaye and, following mitigation, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The court also ordered her to pay D10,000 in compensation or serve an additional month in prison in default of payment.

The conviction followed a Police investigation that led to the recovery of the baby in Busumbala on October 12, 2026. Acting on information from members of the public, officers located the child with Jawo, who was subsequently arrested, charged and prosecuted.

The baby underwent a medical examination and was reunited with her mother.

The Gambia Police Force thanks members of the public whose information assisted the investigation and the safe recovery of the child.

GPF, UNICEF DEVELOP CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING MATERIALS FOR POLICE

The Gambia Police Force (GPF), with funding support from UNICEF Gambia, commenced the development of Child Protection Training Modules and Trainer Toolkits at the National Nutrition Agency Conference Hall on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Coordinated through the Gender and Child Welfare Unit, the materials will be integrated into the Police Training School curriculum for both recruit and refresher training, strengthening officers’ knowledge and skills in protecting children.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, UNICEF’s Deputy Country Representative emphasised the importance of child protection in law enforcement and the need to equip officers to respond appropriately to children’s needs. UNICEF’s Head of Child Protection also attended.

Delivering remarks on behalf of Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray, Assistant Inspector General of Police for Crime Management Amie Nyassi expressed appreciation to UNICEF for supporting the initiative. She highlighted its contribution to preparing officers to safeguard children and respond professionally when children come into contact with the Police.

The Commissioner of Planning also attended the opening. The initiative forms part of the GPF’s efforts to embed child protection in police training and daily practice.

GPF AND KAIPTC OPEN SECOND COHORT OF ELECTION VIOLENCE AND SECURITY COURSE

The Gambia Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), held the opening ceremony for the second cohort of the Election Violence and Security Course at Paradise Suites Hotel on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The course brings together personnel from the GPF, The Gambia Armed Forces, The Gambia Immigration Department, The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, The Gambia Prisons Service, State Intelligence Services and the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia.

Assistant Inspector General of Police for Administration Ebrima Bah delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray. KAIPTC Course Director Assistant Commissioner of Police Edem Agbitor also addressed participants. Commissioner Famara Jobarteh of the GPF’s International Affairs Unit attended the ceremony.

Following the completion of the first cohort, the training continues efforts to strengthen security personnel’s preparedness to prevent and respond to election violence, maintain public order and protect lives and property ahead of the December 2026 presidential election.

The GPF remains committed to building staff capacity and strengthening cooperation among the services to support a peaceful and secure election.

GPF CONCLUDES SECOND PHASE OF NATIONWIDE PEACE ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN IN SANTANTO

The Gambia Police Force concluded the second phase of its nationwide peace advocacy campaign in Santanto village, Central River Region South, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Officers and community members discussed peaceful electoral participation, social cohesion and the value of working together to address safety concerns. The engagement also reinforced the importance of respectful communication and cooperation between the Police and the communities they serve.

Through visits to schools and villages across the region, the campaign has encouraged dialogue and shared responsibility for maintaining peace ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

The Gambia Police Force engaged residents of Bantanto in Central River Region South on Friday, October 16, 2026, as part of its nationwide peace advocacy campaign.

The discussion focused on peaceful electoral participation, community cooperation and the importance of raising local concerns through lawful channels. Officers encouraged residents to share information that could help prevent crime and to reject messages that might create tension between neighbours.

The engagement gave residents and officers an opportunity to strengthen communication ahead of the presidential election.
