Netherlands Institute at Athens The NIA is one of the 'Dutch Academic Institutes Abroad', facilitating Dutch research and education

Six Dutch universities co-operate to make the NIA and the other NWIB's (Dutch Academic Institutes Abroad) possible: The Universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht, Nijmegen and the VU University Amsterdam. The Netherlands Institute at Athens is one of the eighteen foreign "archaeological" schools in Athens, allowing Dutch teams to conduct archaeological research in Greece. Besides archaeological fieldwork and study of material, the NIA has guest rooms and grants to give scholars and students the opportunity to pursue their studies in Greece. The NIA organizes courses, lectures and conferences, in co-operation with the Dutch universities and Greek counterparts. The NIA is not limited to the study of antiquity; we aims to cater for a much broader range of scholarship. Present-day history, language and literature, society, economics, politics and cultural heritage management are other subjects on which the NIA has organized successful courses and seminars.

NIA Director, Prof. Dr. Jan Paul Crielaard, opened the event with a brief talk on the history of the Archaeological Schools in Athens. He also shared a personal experience as an archaeologist, and he referred to the important role that a library plays in an archaeological research and an excavation.

In addition, NIA Librarian, Ms Sotiria Nikolou, talked about the establishment of the NIA Library, and presented the activities organised by the NIA Library. Finally, she gave a tour to the fellow librarians of the Library and the NIA premises.
