Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Athen The Athens office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. Committed to the ideas of social democracy.

World Climate Action Day is celebrated worldwide and encourages individuals and communities to take meaningful action against climate change. The office of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation Greece firmly supports efforts to reduce environmental harm as they strengthen democracy and equality around the globe.

The consequences of climate change fall hardest on those who have contributed least to it, including low-income households, marginalised communities and the countries most vulnerable to its impacts. Climate justice means sharing both the burdens and the benefits of the green transition fairly. When the people have a real voice in climate decisions and equal access to clean energy, healthy environments and new job opportunities, the transition reduces existing inequalities instead of deepening them.

Today we commemorate the anniversary of Athens’ liberation from N**i troops on October 12, 1944. Exactly 82 years ago, a brutal occupation that brought famine, mass reprisals against civilians and the persecution of all those who were targeted for who they were or what they believed, among them Jews, Roma and resistance fighters, ended.

Today remains a symbol of national resilience and resistance. It is also a reminder that freedom and democracy are never guaranteed but must be defended by every generation, in Greece as everywhere in Europe. The office of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation Greece is persistent in its commitment to advocate for freedom and democracy.

The Joint History Project conference on “Violence in History: Experiences, Memories, and Representations in Southeast Europe” started on Thursday, the 25th of September. FES Greece supports the Joint History project and our Director Regine Schubert was a part of the welcome remarks.

The conference brought together historians, educators, and researchers from 13 countries across Southeast Europe – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey – alongside colleagues from Germany, the UK, Norway, Canada, the US, and Spain. Over the course of three days, participants engaged in crucial knowledge and experience exchange around some of the most pressing questions facing history education in the region today.
