Thirty recruits of the Guyana Fire Service will participate in a trafficking in persons awareness training session today Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Guyana Fire Service Training School in Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
The Ministry of Home Affairs organised the session through the Secretariat of the Ministerial Task Force on Trafficking in Persons. It was designed to introduce recruits to the fundamentals of human trafficking and help them recognise and respond to suspected cases they may encounter in their professional duties.
The training will cover the forms of exploitation associated with trafficking in persons and the importance of a human rights-based approach. Recruits will also be exposed to the indicators of trafficking and how to identify situations involving potential adult and child victims.
Inspector Marilyn Rodney, Head of the Guyana Police Force’s Trafficking in Persons Unit, is among the presenters scheduled to guide the recruits through the identification of potential victims. The programme will also include a presentation on offences under the Combating Trafficking in Persons Act No. 7 of 2023.
Another focus is the appropriate response to suspected victims, including reporting and referral procedures. Case studies, role play and group discussions will form part of the session, giving participants an opportunity to consider how they might respond to situations they could encounter while on duty.
The training brought together representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministerial Task Force Secretariat and the Guyana Police Force’s Trafficking in Persons Unit. The 30 recruits formed the first batch identified for this training initiative.
