The Ministry of Public Works is pleased to have aided in the successful delivery of the new recreational park at Number 63 Beach, representing the fifth and largest facility of its kind completed in the region. Designed to serve both local residents and international visitors, the project reflects the Government's broader mandate to create transformative, high-quality public spaces that go beyond conventional infrastructure to enhance community well-being and economic vitality.
The ex*****on of the project highlights the Ministry’s commitment to localized capacity building and coastal protection. All construction works at the facility were carried out entirely by Berbice contractors under the direct supervision of the Sea and River Defence department. By utilizing local talent and resources, the Ministry ensured that project funding contributed directly to regional economic activity while delivering essential coastal development.
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill emphasized that the park must evolve into a premier tourist destination, in tandem with the history of the beach, noting that its purpose extends well beyond providing a simple area for recreation and socializing. Describing Number 63 Beach Park as a must-visit location for anyone traveling to Guyana, the Minister called for concerted efforts to realize its potential as a major national and international attraction.
“What you are experiencing here is not just because we have money… it is because of vision and priorities. And I must ask you to appreciate the visionary leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and by extension his wife, First Lady Arya Ali.”
To support this vision, the park features dedicated sports facilities, including a football pitch and volleyball courts. These amenities are designed to host competitive sporting events and tournaments, attracting increased foot traffic to the area. This influx of visitors is expected to generate significant economic benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises, including local vendors, food service providers, and transportation operators servicing the site.
This recreational development further aligns with the Ministry's injections across Berbice, where over seven kilometres of critical sea-defence works valued at $5.5 billion have been completed from 2020 to present.
By establishing structured public spaces for leisure and sports, the Ministry aims to give residents opportunities to relax and enjoy their surroundings while simultaneously reducing recreational disturbances within residential neighborhoods.
Further, Minister Edghill urged those gathered to join government as it continues its clean up campaigns to improve the aesthetics of the roadways and communities.
“Every NDC in region 6 and every NDC throughout the length and breadth of Guyana have been given the equipment to address the dumbing of garbage, along the seawall, the road corner and desolate streets. It must come to an end…so we will need you to work together to make that happen. It’s a culture change that is required and a culture change that must come from each of us.” Minister Edghill emphasized.
