The Environmental Protection Agency was established on World Environment Day, June 5, 1996.

It was on this date that the then Acting President of Guyana, the Honourable Samuel Hinds, assented to Environmental Protection Act (No 11, 1996). The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to “take measures necessary for effective protection and management of the natural environment, coordination of conservation programmes, sustainable use of natural resources, assessment of the impact of development activities on the environment and the integration of appropriate environmental provisions into development planning”.
